Chocolate Archives
Hi, my name is Megan, and I'm a Chocoholic
Phew, I feel so much better now that I got that off my chest. Of course, I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in addiction, so I doubt I'll receive any complaints about adding an entire Chocolate category to this site.
Did you know that the first chocolate was consumed in liquid form? In fact, it was a medicinal treat only available to the elite. That's right - it was medicine! So better keep eating it, if you don't want to get sick.
Speaking of liquid chocolate, I came across La Chocolatière in a magazine recently. What's a Chocolatière, you ask? It's basically a chocolate pot that makes perfect drinking chocolate. Now keep in mind, drinking chocolate is different than hot cocoa. It's richer and creamier and is made from real chocolate flakes. You could always just use powered cocoa, but I think that would be an insult to La Chocolatière. Once you try it, you'll never go back to Nestle's Quik again.
Also seen at Amazon and on sale at iKitchen

The chocolate even non-chocolate lovers adore
I just knew I wasn't alone in my chocolate addiction! I received this message from our newest reviewer Janet the other day:
Girrrrrrrrrrl, you know how I was saying this weekend chocolate wasn't really my thing so much? Well! This [Vosges Barcelona Bar] is the BEST I've ever had! It's the slight salty taste that does it for me, what a surprise on the tongue! On the back of the box, there are directions on "how to enjoy an exotic candy bar." The 4th step is taste:
"Place a small piece of chocolate on your tongue and press it to the roof of your mouth. Within thirty seconds, thc chocolate square will slowly begin to melt around your tongue. Dark milk chocolate melts into the mineral and sumptuous taste of sea salt and roasted almonds, reminiscent of Marcona, Spain."It's quite expensive, $7.49 for 3.4 ounce (97 grams) bar, but why not indulge in a small piece as a luxurious treat every now and then...YUM!
This is my new favorite treat!
Thanks Janet!

It's OK to eat chocolate for breakfast
I like yogurt, but I reaaaaallly loooooove Stonyfield Farm's Fat Free Chocolate Underground Yogurt. Chocolate yogurt?! Tell me you're not surprised!
I'm not a huge milk fan, so it can sometimes be a struggle to get my daily dose of calcium. At least that was the case until I discovered this little piece of heaven on earth. Stonyfield Farm's yogurt is smooth and creamy and distinctly chocolatey, and the best part is that it's all natural so there's none of the nasty sweetener aftertaste. And did I mention it's fat-free?
I pick up a supply during my weekly shopping trip, it's carried at most grocery stores. But a word of warning to you - this stuff goes pretty fast. There has been more than one time I had to threaten Jimbo not to come home until he found it. Can't find it where you are? No worries. Amazon will ship it to you. Awesome!

The Ultimate Chocolate "Bar"
Located just steps away from shopping at Fanueil Hall and Downtown Crossing, this decadent "Chocolate Bar," located in the luxurious Langham Hotel, is the perfect place to rest your peds and indulge before stepping out for more shopping.
The Chocolate Bar is an endless buffet stacked with chocolate mousse, cakes, made-to-order chocolate crepes, ice cream, cookies, milk chocolate passion fruit tarts, miniature s’more cups, truffles, waffles with chocolate fondue and more. And for those ladies watching their weight, The Chocolate Bar also offers special low-calorie and low-carb options.
Though I haven't yet experienced this extravagance, it is at the tippity-top of my must-do list this year. I cannot wait to experience what has been voted "Best Indulgence" by Boston Magazine.

Dark Chocolate M&Ms

I have always loved m&m's. When I was a kid it was definitely my candy of choice. Since I've grown up I've fallen for high-quality dark chocolate, leaving m&m's behind for the most part. Then my coworker introduced me to special edition dark chocolate m&m's as part of the Star Wars campaign. Of course I was hooked and had as many as I could until the campaign dwindled. I have missed my dark chocolate m&m's. Recently another coworker of mine told me they were back and I ran out to get my very own bag. Run out and get yours! Quick! before they're gone again.
Now, if they'd only bring back dark chocolate Kit Kat and my life would be complete.

Wait, You've Got Some Chocolate on Your Shirt!
Oooh! Two of my favorite things - chocolate and t-shirts! What could be better? A t-shirt DYED in chocolate. Yup, you heard me right, this t-shirt has been dyed naturally in Ghirardelli chocolate.
I spotted this t-shirt and a bunch more in different styles when I was in San Francisco and of course I just had to have one. Now you want one don't you? Go ahead and pick one out!
Now if chocolate's not your thing (bite your tongue!) there are a ton of other specialty-dyed shirts on the site. You can get shirts in the following items as well: Kona Coffee, Pale Ale, Wine, Chile, Money, Hemp, Blue Hawaii, Crater, Hibiscus, Key Lime, Rum, and Sunflower. Now you've got a ton to choose from!

Chocolate: The cure for what ails ya!
I received a sample box of these chocolates on Thursday and they were gone by Sunday. I devoured most of them by myself, but did share one or two with my sister Tara and contributor Janet.
They were decadent. I'm normally a dark chocolate girl myself, but these milk chocolate sweets made me seriously rethink that position.
I started off with a positively twisted crispy salted pretzel which was generously coated with a thick layer of milk chocolate. It was the perfect combination of sweet and salty (A salt-lover at heart, Janet really dug the saltiness).
The crackin' up classic graham was similarly covered with tons of milk chocolate and transported me back to the days of s'mores in front of the campfire. I love that the graham was crisp and not stale like other chocolate-covered grahams I've tried. Hmmmm, I wonder if they'll try chocolate covered s'mores next! If so, count me in!
I have to say that my very favorite was the pillow talk melt-in-your mouth marshmallows. Again with the generous layer of chocolate over a soft squishy marshmallow. Decadent.
Janet and Tara quickly snatched up the two peanut crunch bars and looooved them. Tara tried it first and tasted coconut. Janet showed up afterward and said the EXACT same thing.
I give these chocolates an A+. If I were you, I'd order some right now. What's even better is that b.sweets is donating 20% of its online sales of the ultimate Chocolate Rx 12 oz. sampler box to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Chocolate for a cause! What could be better!

Chocolate aromatherapy for your PMS
I love chocolate and I have been known to use a little sarcasm and dry wit on occasion. Haven't we all? Well the ladies at Chick Wicks know all about it. They've embodied the feminine (sarcastic) spirit with their line of candles and home fragrance.
A little birdie told me about these candles and I just had to smell them for myself. Luckily, the ladies at Chick Wicks were kind enough to send me a few samples to try out for myself and I couldn't be happier. The soy-based candles are double-wicked in a reusable jar and come packaged in a cute tin decorated with hints, suggestions and even martini recipes that will help you with the situation at hand. These candles come in a variety of scents for a variety of moods/themes including:
PMS Mood Tamer (Scented Coping Candle)
Rid-Ed (Divorce/Break-up Candle)
Snag-a-Man (Scented Love Potion Candle)
I just about lost it after reading the container for the PMS Mood Tamer candle:
"Think PMS stands for Pass My Shotgun? It's that time of the month and you're either crying of locked, loaded and looking for a fight. PMS rage is real; just ask the people who live with you.PMS is nature's little way of bringing all of your issues (big or petty) that usually lay dormant, right to the surface. That's right, your hormones are in the driver's seat and you no longer have the wheel. It's time to be careful. Time to bite your tongue. We're all so glad it only happens once a month, but when your "little friend" has come for a visit, you can burn this candle to warn loved ones and help you through the tough parts. Period."
And the back of the tin is even more hilarious! What a great idea for Christmas!

Munch, crunch, crunch... *grin*
There is NOTHING I don't like about Moose Munch Confection by Harry and David! A friend gave me a box recently--she thought I needed some cheering up. I opened it then and there and had a few pieces and thought...oh, my, this is FAR better than I thought it was be! It's a combination of dark chocolate coated popcorn, caramel corn, almonds & cashews. RUN, don't walk, to wherever you can get some and give it a try. You will NOT be disappointed...and you'll be cheered if you need it! They also have a bunch of Moose Munch Gifts that would perfect for any chocolate-lover on your list.

Because we Chocolovers like to WEAR our chocolate
While at Sephora with Janet recently (we do seem to spend a great deal of time there, don't we?) we came across this lovely little fragrance called Chocolovers by Aquolina. And since we all know I loooooove chocolate, I just had to try it. I sprayed a little on a wand and periodically tested the scent as we went about our shopping. At the end of our trip it was deemed a keeper, especially since upon my return home, Jimbo and the kitties went gaga over it. It's not overly sweet or ridiculously chocolate-scented; it has hints of vanilla, hazelnut and orange. The perfect comforting fragrance for the winter. I think I'll add it to my Kaboodle wish list. You should too!

You wouldn't wear em together ... or WOULD you?
The second I saw this Choco-licious Bracelet at the Pixelgirl Shop I wanted to just eat it up. That could become a problem, but a problem i'm willing to face.
This lovely Green Olive Bracelet is perfect for those nights where only a dirty martini will do! I think I shall!

Need a taste of childhood? Have a Whoopie!
Yearning for the childhood pleasures of homemade whoopie pies, but hesitant to deal with the mess of baking? The family-run business Wicked Whoopies gives you all the nostalgic sensations of the fresh desserts, delivered right to your door!
With its bakery in Gardner, ME, Wicked Whoopies offers over 20 varieties of the cream-filled treats, including mint, gingerbread, peanut butter, and even strawberry! I got the chance to sample one of the classic variety, featuring a moist devil's food cake, with a nice, light vanilla cream filling. The portions are individually wrapped for freshness and generously served, but with just the right amount of sweetness that enables the eater to finish the whole pie without feeling overwhelmed. A great party snack, either for kids or the young at heart.
The Classic Wicked Whoopie is just that -- a wonderfully decadent classic whoopie pie! It's deliciously moist and a bit messy, but that's part of the fun! If you're looking to satisfy that serious sweet tooth, this is the treat for you. And it is huge--share one with a friend today!

Who can eat just one?
Knowing how much I love chocolate, my cousin Kerry sent me the following review:
So, these new Hershey Cacao Reserve truffles (in the Altoid-esque boxes) are fabulous. Eight truffles come in a tin. I'm finding they are great for keeping at work. One is perfect for a late day chocolate fix -- and, if you can eat just one -- they're only 36 calories each!

Fudge-a-licious
I received a box of fudge from The Fudge Bar recently.
Now, I have to tell you, as much as I love (eat, breathe, sleep) chocolate, I've never been a huge fudge fan. Why not? Too sugary, too gritty. But this fudge? So not like that. This fudge has to be the smoothest and richest in flavor of any fudge I've ever eaten.
I think I'll have to rethink this fudge thing. Thanks Fudge Bar! You're a hop, skip, and a jump from here. I think I'll have to stop by and test out some of your other gazillion fudge flavors. Like: Fudgegasm, Mint Chocolate Swirl, Chocolate Cheeseake, Mint Oreo...

An entirely different type of Chocolate chip
While shopping at Whole Foods the other day, I pointed out a bag of chocolate tortilla chips to Megan, a self-avowed chocoholic. I must admit I was scoffing a bit. Chocolate flavored tortilla chips? Yuck! But! I decided I must try them.
Boy am I glad I did! Um, not yuck at all! Extremely yum!!! These tortillas chips are made with Dutch cocoa, cane sugar and sea salt, as well as stone ground white corn, non-hydrogenated canola oil and sugarcane fiber. They have no trans fat, no cholesterol, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors...and man are they good! Just plain, out of the bag, chocolately, salty crunchy goodness.
Check them out the next time you're at Whole Foods. You won't be disappointed!

Well Traversed Chocolate
The other day I headed off to the mall to do a little shopping! When I got there it was closed. I hadn't really payed attention to the time and it wasn't going to open for another fifteen minutes. So.... what now? Thankfully Target
was open so my spirits lifted. Let the shopping begin, without delay!
Heading past the snack aisle I spotted chocolate. I didn't recognize the brand but it looked good. I know what your thinking, chocolate from Target? Yup! The brand is called Choxie
and the selection of flavors is great. Available is chocolate made using ingredients from different parts of the world. I just had to try it and it was DELICIOUS!

Vosges strikes again with chocolate-y tortilla chips!
Yum! Vosges Chocolate Tortilla Chips...why didn't WE think of this? Vosges, a company we've mentioned here before, takes organic tortilla chips, coats them with deep milk chocolate, and dusts them with just a hint of ancho and chipotle chili powders. Oh my! Just perfect with a nice glass of red wine...or perhaps a margarita?
Our model certainly enjoyed them!

Hotel Chocolat Rocky Road Slab
Instead, I cracked it out at our small New Year's Eve party and it was a huge hit - especially for my soon-to-be brother-in-law who is a fellow chocolate connoisseur. And by "cracked it out" I mean that I removed it from the refrigerator and purposefully dropped it on the floor with a loud crack. Then again. Then I served the giant slab on a cutting board, preserving it's shape to much oohs and ahhhs from the crowd!
"But how did it taste," you ask? Well, let's just say that many, many more slabs in my future.

Truffles by any other name are not the same.
Target's Choxie truffles are okay in a pinch. Godiva truffles are delicious to say the least. But if you are looking for the finest, most luscious handmade French truffles... look no further than XOX Truffles in San Francisco.
The chocolate truffle is said to have originated in France, and due to its appearance, was named after the French mushroom-like fungus used in the finest dishes. Authentic French truffles are usually small, irregular-shaped and coated in cocoa, sugar or chopped nuts -- something you do not often see on American truffles. And above all else, French truffles contain the smoothest ganache and the finest shell of decadent chocolate.

I've sampled truffles across the United States and in Paris. Yet on a recent trip to San Francisco, I stopped by XOX to taste for myself if Chef Gorce's truffles were truly better than the rest. I no longer doubt the hype. The little packages of heaven were perfection! With over 20 liquored, non-liquored and vegan flavor choices, there is no doubt that one (or all 20) will entice you. Tempting flavors include traditional dark and milk chocolate, Hazelnut, Orange and Raspberry. But if you are feeling adventurous, try the Rum Coco, Triple Sec, French Roast or Earl Grey. No flavor will leave you disappointed -- just craving more.
You can purchase XOX Truffles at their store in San Francisco, other locations throughout the Bay Area or online. Prices start at $30 for a box of 30 truffles. If you purchase online, it is better to order during the colder months, as XOX Truffles are wax-free and delicate. Delicieux!!

My boy knows me well...
He knows I'm a sucker for roses on Valentine's Day, so he had some sent to me. He knows I love chocolate, but that I shouldn't indulge too much, so he gave me two Godiva truffles.
He knows I love yellow and polka dots and everything cute so he braved Victoria's Secret and presented me with the most adorable little slip I ever did see!
I'm so lucky that my boy knows me!
PS - While checking out the slip at Vickie's I also came across this lovely little number. That's certainly going on my wish list!

Chocolate good enough to drink!
Think drinking chocolate is the same as hot cocoa? Think again!
According to About.com
"Drinking Chocolates" are made from real chocolate as opposed to "Hot Cocoa" which is made from cocoa powder (the powdery remains of chocolate liquor after cocoa butter is removed). When you purchase a package of drinking chocolate it will often be in the form of chocolate shavings or chunks. As a chocolate lover, I'm pretty ashamed to admit that the first time I ever heard of drinking chocolate was either a) when Janet brought me some back from Paris or b) when Starbucks launched Chantico, a drinking chocolate-type drink. But once I did discover it I fell fast in love.
Drinking chocolates are not instant like hot cocoa. You must add hot milk, cream, or water to the chocolate in order for it to melt and be whisked together. Because of the higher cocoa butter content, drinking chocolates will also be richer and often thicker than hot cocoa.
Of course now I'm on an never-ending quest for the best drinking chocolate out there. Meet my newest best find: Schokinag drinking chocolate. I can't quite decide which is best - Triple Chocolate or Extreme Dark, although this dark-chocolate lover thinks it might just be the triple chocolate.
What does drinking chocolate taste like, you ask? It's nothing like cocoa - nope, think pure chocolate melted with milk. Not as thick as a chocolate sauce, but thicker than a hot cocoa. It's like heave n earth - the best comfort food, ever.
But don't take my word for it - head on over the Schokinag and try their award-winner line of drinking chocolates. You won't regret it!

I'm Moonstruck for chocolate
I first discovered Moonstruck Chocolate back when attending the opening of Nordstrom at the Natick Collection in Natick, MA. I passed by the storefront (It wasn't yet open) and promised myself that I'd have to go back once it was open. That was back in September and I am ashamed to say that I haven't been back.
Methinks I need to make a special girl's shopping trip to Natick. Who's in?
That's not to say that I haven't tried Moonstruck Chocolate - oh no, their web site if chock-full of goodies that you can have delivered to your door. The chocolate is amazing - but the best part is the intricate designs available. Check out this Ladybug Truffle Collection. Isn't it adorable! It would make a great addition to an Easter basket or even a little treat for yourself - just because.
I'm always amazed at how much chocolate they have available. Not only do they have cute truffles they also have:
An organic section with chocolate and hot chocolate.
Three additional types of hot chocolate, confetti crunch, marshmallows and the ultimate indulgence - chocolate covered marshymallows. I love me some marshymallows.
Moonstruck chocolate gifts and signature items.
And be sure to check out the top 10 best-selling items on the site - see what everyone else is crazy for.
They've even got some decadent chocolate recipes that I just HAVE to try out.
OK, that's it - I'm make a trip right now!

Crack for dark chocolate lovers: Royal Dark Cadbury Mini Eggs
I bought one of the big bags once. Once! I opened the bag up, ate one, then another, and I swear next thing I knew the bag was gone! They are dangerous! One on my many guilty pleasures.
But you know what I found yesterday when I hit the local CVS for an emergency chocolate fix? ROYAL DARK Cadbury Mini Eggs! I swear the heavens opened up, angels sang, and sunlight shown down through the drop ceiling and lit upon these babies. They were mine!
I was good - I only got one bag (on top of some Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, Lindt extra dark chocolate truffles, Baked Lays and a Caffeine-free Diet Coke. Yes. I did.).
The bag was empty before I got home. Delicious!

Salty chocolate
Whoever thought up the idea of combining sea salt and chocolate was brilliant. Why didn't I think of it first? I could be a millionaire!
I've been a lover of this combination since my good friend Janet introduced me to the barcelona bar by Vosges - and now I'm an addict. Everywhere I go I search high and low for salty chocolate.
I found this Organic Milk Sea Salt and Almonds Chocolate Bar in Vermont at the Lake Champlain chocolate store. It's chocolatey, salty and even has almonds.
You can feel good about eating it, too. It's organic!

Purely Decadent coconut milk "ice cream"
I've got "ice cream" in quotes up there because this Purely Decadent non-dairy frozen dessert isn't ice cream. No milk, baby. No soy, either! Say hello to ice cream and bye-bye to lactose intolerance! How can that be? Easy! It's made with coconut milk instead of cow's milk, which gives it a taste of coconut that blends well with the main flavor. It's also decadently creamy with a consistency even smoother than ice cream and half the fat and contains only 65% of the calories in "regular" ice cream. It wins over my frozen yogurt any day.
Other great stuff about it?
-
Dairy Free
- Lactose Free
- Cholesterol Free
- No Trans Fats
- Certified Vegan
- Certified Made with Organic Ingredients
It's so easy to find, there's no reason not to try it out on this July 4th weekend! You'll be the hit of the BBQ!

Champagne + chocolate = heaven
It's my second business trip to Glasgow, and during my downtime I find myself shopping in the same stores as my last visit even though there are gazillions of stores in the shopping district.
Why? I find myself craving the same stuff. Like these Charbonnel et Walker Champagne truffles that I picked up at John Lewis. They are to die for! I liked them so much I dropped nearly 10 pounds (about $20 US) on them. Totally worth it.
But you don't have to travel to the UK to get some for yourself; if you're in NYC, head on over to Café Charbonnel at Saks, and you'll be on your way to chocolate heaven.
Nowhere near UK or NYC? Check out these places - Macy's State Street Chicago, Neiman Marcus Stores, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, Palo Alto, Honolulu, San Antonio, Macy's Stores, Minneapolis, Chicago, Troy USA.
