It's a wonderful life after Garmin!

Garmin nüvi 250W GPSOnce upon a time I had no direction. I'd hop into the car to go somewhere new and I'd get completely lost. I'm usually a great navigator, but even the best navigator can get lost when they don't know where they are or where they're going. I would try, though. I'd faithfully put my trust in Google Maps, yet even equipped with the best, most accurate map in the whole wide world, I can still get lost if I don't know where I am.

I had heard all the wondrous things about GPS, but I always thought they were too expensive for me until the lovely Janet bought a phone with GPS (which she nicknamed Jessamyn) and I just thought that was the greatest thing ever.

I did some research and realized that GPS units were nowhere near as expensive as I thought with some starting around $150. Then I contacted Garmin and they were kind enough to let me test this new love of my life, my baby, the "Garmy" Garmin nüvi 250W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (that's right baby, that's you - who's your momma, that's right!).

Obvs you can tell that I'm happy with it. So happy, in fact, that I just can't bear to part with it (Yes, sweetheart, parting will be such sweet sorrow). So what about it makes me happy? Oh. So. Much!

  1. It tells me where I am.
Because really, most of the time I really have no idea.

  2. It helps me find where I'm going.
It's got a huge database of businesses, services, and just about anything else I can think of - or any address anywhere.

  3. It talks to me.
It gets lonely in the car sometimes, and I suspect I'm not alone here. I especially love that Garmy has a voice (one that I discovered could change from American English to British English and a whole lot of other languages I was afraid to even try).

  4. It tells me when to take a turn.
I get distracted sometimes (Ok, Janet, a LOT!) [only sometimes, Meg!] and I have missed a turn on more than one occasion. My Garmy's fancy GPS functionality knows exactly where I am and tells me exactly when I have to take my next turn, 30 seconds before my turn as well as just as I have to take my turn. This is where Google Maps fail - a piece of paper can't tell me where I am and when I should be turning.

  5. It helps to keep me safe.
Have you ever read printed directions or a map while driving? Yeah, me too. But dude, that shizz is dangerous - you could hurt yourself! Garmy, my dearest, gently points me in the right direction without having to take my eyes off the road.

  6. It corrects me when I make mistakes.
Sometimes I don't listen to what Garmy tells me to do. I'm human, I'm not perfect. But what I love about my Garmy is that it doesn't get angry with me when I make a mistake. If I take the wrong turn or miss and exit, it immediately recalculates my route and tells me how to get back on the right route - without raising its voice [unlike me, sorry Meg! - Janet].

  7. It lets me choose my ride.Garmin GarageI love cutesy little features. My Garmy comes with a few standard cars to choose from (I like the monster truck car!) but I can also download additional cars from the Garmin Garage. How cool is that?

  8. It knows where home is.
And everywhere else I choose to go. I can input my home address and press one button to navigate home from anywhere I am, making me feel all cozy inside. It also remembers the places that I go so I don't have to search for them over and over again.

  9. It silences back seat drivers.
Garmy baby has saved my fiance and I many, many fights in the mere 30 days that I have used it. You see, we both know where we're going yet we rarely agree on how to get there. We don't fight about the directions anymore because Garmy knows it all. I like to put the power in the hands of those who know all the answers. (And before Garmy came along I had the power - that's right!)

  10. It empowers me.
Before I fell in love with Garmy at first sight, I was always reluctant to drive into the city (Boston) myself. It's such a sissy thing, but the city is just so complicated to navigate with six gazillion one way streets, constant construction, traffic, and crazy drivers to deal to boot. Add reading a map or directions to that and you've got a recipe for disaster. I know, I've been there and it always ends up with someone crying (usually me). With Garmy by my side I'm no longer afraid of the big bad city. In fact, I love it. I feel so powerful and confident heading into the city now. In fact, I've been there much more often since Garmy is there to help.
So now that you know how great zee Garmy is, you know you want one for yourself, don't you? It's not too late to add it to your Christmas list (dude, you and I both know that he (or she!) hasn't even started shopping for you - you've got plenty of time). And, it would make a great gift for him or her or just about any driver on your shopping list! Especially the ones (and you know who I'm talkin' 'bout!) that don't even know how to navigate out of their own driveway.

It's very reasonable priced, too. The Garmin web site lists the suggested retail price at around $375, but I know that you can get it at Amazon for about $280. What a freaking bargain, eh?

Be sure to check out the entire family of affordably-priced models. You know you want to!

Presto! You've got mail!

HP Printing Mailbox for use with Presto Service

The hardest person on my Christmas list? It's Grammy for sure! She's got everything a lady needs (and them some!) so I can never figure out what to buy her. But I think I hit the jackpot this year with this HP Printing Mailbox for use with Presto Service.

It looks like a printer but it's really an email inbox that lets me (and anyone on her friend's list) send pictures and emails. (Don't worry - no spam here - only people on the specified friend's list can send mail).  My Grandmother doesn't have a computer or Internet access, so this works perfectly for her. She can stay up to date with emails and pictures of the family.

How does it work?
  • It shares an existing phone line to connect to the Presto Service, uses plain paper and standard HP print cartridges. Connection to the Presto Internet Service only costs $9.99/month or $99.99/year.
  • Presto automatically transforms messages into beautiful full-color printouts. Several times per day, on a schedule you choose, the HP Printing Mailbox dials in to the Presto Service to retrieve new messages and prints them in beautiful color-automatically.
  • Presto Service includes unlimited incoming email, photos and free content from the Presto Newsstand. Comes complete with power cord, phone cord, print cartridge, paper, and Easy Setup Guide.
Easy-peasy. Order it today from
  • BestBuy.com (Choose Expedited Shipping for Christmas delivery.)
  • Buy.com (Choose next day air for Christmas delivery)
  • Amazon.com (but unfortunately it won't arrive it in time for Christmas)
