A martini for your Christmas Tree

Drink Ornaments

I love a good martini (or two!). Who doesn't? Of course my love of martinis border on obsessive. Some day I want to own my own martini bar and hang out behind the bar and shake up some really fabulous martinis. My favorite martini the dirty girl scout (also known at the Mega-tini) includes vanilla vodka, godiva chocolate and mint chocolate flavored baileys. Mmmmm!

Where was I? Oh, yes! I discovered these adorable Martini Ornaments at Crate & Barrel and they immediately went on my wish list.

I'll have a cup o yard to go please! No whip, thanks!

061220-yarn.jpgI've always wanted to learn how to knit. I've walked by the yarn section of the craft store many a time, but couldn't get myself to buy the supplies. I didn't really know where to start and I didn't want to invest a heck of a lot of money into a new project. But then I discovered Cup o Yarn, that contains enough yarn to knit a full length scarf as well as bamboo knitting needles and a complete instruction booklet for knitters of all levels. It's just what I've needed! Come January 1st, I'm going to start me a new hobby!

Gift ideas for last-minute Lucy

Last minuteNot all of us can start and finish our shopping before Thanksgiving starts. Life happens and many of us don't have the time or the inclination to start our shopping until the eleventh hour. Of course eleventh hour shoppers can't buy on-line. For that reason, I've put together this nifty list of last minute gifts that you can get locally.

  • Booz. Almost everyone likes booz. While at a Yankee Swap recently the bottles of booz ended up changing hands and where undoubtedly the hit of the swap.
  • Scratch/Lottery Tickets. These tend to be number two at a swap, people love the possibility of winning some cash!
  • Gift certificates (Dunkin Donuts/Starbucks/Restaurants, etc.). Gift certificates are a GREAT idea and you can get a gift certificate for just about anything! Even gas stations!
  • Magazine Subscription. If you're really last-minute, stop by a convenience store and pick up the current issue then tear out the gift subscription form and send it in. Then wrap the magazine and add a tag.
  • Food. Bake it up. If it's too late to bake, stop at whatever convenience store is open and pick up some chocolates or cookies and wrap them in paper and ribbons.
  • Pictures. Grab a picture or take a new one and get copies made. Many places will do it in under and hour. Throw it in a frame and voila! Perfect present!
  • Flowers/Plants. Poinsettas are the perfect gift this time of year. If you can't find one, pick up a pretty bouquet in holiday colors. Flowers never go out of style.
  • Raid the closets. If you're like me you have a closet/drawer/room where you keep all of your emergency gifts. I stock mine with candles, soaps, lotions, and toys. Because you never know when you're going to need a quick gift. Don't forget about the wine rack or liquor cabinet. Anything unopened is free to give, just make sure to dust it off!
  • Music. I've got a zillion songs on my computer - I'm sure the rest of you do as well. Burn them to a CD and give those out for Christmas. Download a bunch of Christmas songs from itunes and hand those out, they make especially good Christmas Presents. Got a few minutes to spare - design a fancy label or cover to make it even more festive!
  • e-Certificates. It's Christmas morning and no stores are open and you need a gift. What to do? Thanks to modern technology, you can now purchase gift certificates online, print them for use as a stocking stuffer, or send them by email! Amazon.com, Buy.com, and GiftCertificates.com are a few of many sites providing this service.

Message Beans: The New Greeting Card

The Spoon Sisters: Message BeanWhy send a card when you can send a Message Bean? A card is so one-dimensional. It sits on a mantle and gets forgotten and thrown away. A Message Bean is a living thing; it grows. Cards? Not so much. Which would you rather get? I thought so. Go grab yours before they're gone!

"Believe it or not, each bean has a word lasered onto one side, and a complementary image on the other. All one has to do to see the "message" is grow the bean. The recipient simply pulls off the foil top and bottom (to let the water drain), and adds about ½ cup of water to the soil. In about a week or so, the bean will poke thru the soil revealing the special message. In today’s crazy world of “real-time”, this is something that is well worth waiting for. Available in Thank You (with Thanks in Japanese), Love (with a heart), Good Luck (with a four leaf clover), and Happy Birthday (with a musical note). Place the aluminum can on a plate or saucer to protect furniture and other surfaces; add water as needed, do not over-water."

For My Mom

MD7_186343_outdoor.jpg
My Mother, thank goodness, is so easy to shop for. I'm getting her this cute tote with a gift certificate from her favorite garden center. The tote is made of easy-cleaning and fast-drying green and tan nylon canvas. It also features six exterior pockets contain all the essentials: stainless-steel fork, two trowels with bamboo handles and two pairs of gardening shears. It can also be be embroidered, so I'm going to put Kath because she is forever calling me from work in her "work voice" saying "Hi Kris, this is Kath" to which I allays go "umm Mom?" then we laugh (I guess you have to be there!)

And The Ribbon Goes To....

personalizedribbon.jpgNamemaker of course! How neat, personalized ribbon! Wrapping your gifts is getting better all the time. I confess, sometimes I go way overboard when I wrap! Ribbon here, ribbon there, add a bow, and I might even use more than one type of wrapping paper for one gift. But I kind of got excited about adding my own little touch, a personalized ribbon. Want to go all out? They also have personalized boxes, clothing labels, gift wrap, gift bags, and more!

Digital Prints Worth Paying For

Puzzles_01.jpgI love to take pictures. I usually carry my digital camera in my purse with me at all times so I am ready to snap pictures at a moment's notice. Last year I decided to enter some of my pictures in the county fair. I did pretty good (got an honorable mention) but I was displeased with the service I used to print my pictures.

This year when fair time came around again- I used a difference service: Mpix.com and let me tell you what a difference! First of all, Mpix.com offers many different finishes and photo touches for your digital prints. They aren't over priced (about the same for the other service I used). Your order is shipped promptly and well packaged. The "other" service I used? Sent the photos in an envelope and by the time they had made the journey to my mailbox- they were fairly mangled. Mpix ships their photos in sturdy, strong boxes. They also offer neat products like pressbooks, statuettes and puzzles made out of your photos- all of which would make great gifts for family during the upcoming holiday season!!

Write Robinson will make you want to write!

Write Robinson - Cherry Blossom Ready to Write Cards

Email has obviously taken over handwritten communications sent via "snail mail." We want our communications sent instantly. But in doing so we miss a bit of that personal touch.  We miss out on that joy that comes when I personal note is waiting for you in the mailbox, seeing the handwriting of a friend or loved one - knowing who it is from before even looking at the return address.

My challenge to you - pick out some gorgeous, personalized stationery and get writing! Check out the Cherry Blossom stationery by Write Robinson featuring gorgeous papers hand-made from recycled cotton rags and hand-marbled in India.

These papers are classy! I was recently sent a sample and was blown away by the quality and workmanship. This is no ordinary paper, it's thick and feels rich beneath your fingers with a pretty brown ribbon that matches the custom name imprinting on the front of the card.

Imagine the job on your friend's and family's faces when they open up your note. Who knows? Maybe you'll start a trend!

PS - The perfect gift for the person on your list who has EVERYTHING! Add a fancy pen and make it a gift basket!

As seen on HGTV: Garden In A Bag

thgibstrawberry.jpgI was watching HGTV during the Thanksgiving holiday and they had a show about the 2007 Gift Show featuring all kinds on interesting and unique gifts. My favorite is the Garden-In-A-Bag by Potting Shed Creations.

Available in a great selection of herbs, flowers, fruits & veggies, and beautiful greens - these kits can be grown indoors, right in the leak-proof bag. And the best part is that they are so fun and easy to grow! All you need to do is mix in the enclosed packet of seed and add water.

The Compactness of the packaging makes these a great gift idea for your college students' bland dorm or off campus apartment.  Best of all? They are very affordable (only $7.50 each). I wouldn't mind some of these myself!

Presto! You've got mail!

HP Printing Mailbox for use with Presto Service

The hardest person on my Christmas list? It's Grammy for sure! She's got everything a lady needs (and them some!) so I can never figure out what to buy her. But I think I hit the jackpot this year with this HP Printing Mailbox for use with Presto Service.

It looks like a printer but it's really an email inbox that lets me (and anyone on her friend's list) send pictures and emails. (Don't worry - no spam here - only people on the specified friend's list can send mail).  My Grandmother doesn't have a computer or Internet access, so this works perfectly for her. She can stay up to date with emails and pictures of the family.

How does it work?
  • It shares an existing phone line to connect to the Presto Service, uses plain paper and standard HP print cartridges. Connection to the Presto Internet Service only costs $9.99/month or $99.99/year.
  • Presto automatically transforms messages into beautiful full-color printouts. Several times per day, on a schedule you choose, the HP Printing Mailbox dials in to the Presto Service to retrieve new messages and prints them in beautiful color-automatically.
  • Presto Service includes unlimited incoming email, photos and free content from the Presto Newsstand. Comes complete with power cord, phone cord, print cartridge, paper, and Easy Setup Guide.
Easy-peasy. Order it today from
  • BestBuy.com (Choose Expedited Shipping for Christmas delivery.)
  • Buy.com (Choose next day air for Christmas delivery)
  • Amazon.com (but unfortunately it won't arrive it in time for Christmas)

Ask for Love Letters for Valentine's Day by Simply Charmed

Simply Charmed - Love LettersI think it's the simplicity of this Love Letters necklace by Simply Charmed that attracts me. The sparkly diamond-cut ball chain and the hand stamped sterling letter charms are designed to look classy - just like you and me.

What letters would I choose? Hmm, I might wear a single "M" or an "M" and "J" for me and my fiance. Or if I'm feeling silly I could even get "B" and "B" for my cats Belle & Buddy. I might even spell out the word "HOPE" or "LOVE".

But my favorite use of this necklace is a mother's necklace. Grab your children's initials or you and your children's - it's up to you. What a perfect idea for a Valentine's gift. Just send your favorite V-day gift-giver the URL and specific instructions (We all know how men can be!).

Be sure to check out Simply Charmed for more Love Letters styles and photo jewelry. Don't you just love handmade?

Shemergency to the rescue!

Mr. & Mrs. - Shemergency KitWhat's a shemergency? According to Ms. & Mrs.:

They're the beauty blunders, fashion faux pas, and personal care predicaments that keep women from looking and feeling their best.
We've all had 'em - a run, a hangnail, a headache, wardrobe malfunction, last-minute cat fur disaster, static ans stinkies - you name it, the shemergency survival kit has you prepared.

Small as it looks (the size of a small make-up case) this kit has it all...

Folding hair brush with mirror, hair spray, clear elastics, earring backs, hand lotion, nail clipper, emery board, clear nail polish, nail polish remover, mending kit, safety pin, double-sided tape, lint remover, shoe shine wipes, stain remover, static remover, breath freshener, lip balm, dental floss, pain reliever, deodorant wipes, tampon, adhesive bandages, facial tissues.
I know! I wonder, too, how it all fits in the bag. I think it's some kind of optical illusion! Oh, and the bag is the best part - it's made of metal mesh and has a cute little fingernail clipper attached. You'll never want to leave home without it.

Make a fabulous gift! Check out Ms. & Mrs. for more handy emergency kits including one for the bride, bridesmaid, working girl and MORE!

Dad, I #%&$*!% love ya!

I learned curse words watching my dad fix things. Just like the scene from "The Christmas Story," my dad frequently cursed to express his exasperation at anything and everything that went wrong while trying to fix things.

Most of the time it involved teeny tiny little nuts and bolts that he could never quite keep a hand on. For some wee things, they sure brought about some big words!

So, in honor or the greatest #%$@&%^&$ Dad in all of the world, I present the Handy Magnet Wristband. If it weren't for you, I would never have developed my colorful truck driver tongue. You %$#@#^&% ROCK!

Check it out at Uncommon goods. One of my top two favorite gift sites! w00t w00t!

PS - hey, while you're there, why not pick up a little sumptin' for yourselfish?

I built my own Hello Kitty!

She's my alter-ego you see. Or I'm hers, I haven't decided.

Isn't she the coolest? My Hawaiian Style Tropical Hello Kitty is from Build-A-Bear. You know - the place at the mall where you can make your own stuffed animals? Did you know you could make a Hello Kitty there?

Yes, ma'am. It's the perfect place to bring your daughter, niece, cousin, *cough*self*cough* to build your own personal alter-ego. You get to pick out their clothes, dress them and can even play online with them!

They had me at "clothes" - I'm heading over right now and picking up a flashy new outfit for my Kawaii Kitty! Kitty needs a wedding gown!

PS - And for the record, My name is Megan, I'm 32 years old and I adore Hello Kitty. Am I alone here?

The perfect giftcard: Two gifts in one!

Vivabox: The perfect gift to give, and receiveI'm not a big fan of giving gift cards as presents - it just seems to generic and impersonal. Maybe I'm selfish,  but I enjoy watching someone open my presents.

Thing is, I LIKE receiving gift cards. I like to be able to imagine, browse, and choose my gift. It's like a little treat for myself.

Enter Vivabox - a new kind of gift certificate that comes with a tangible gift and is customizable by the receiver. Just launched yesterday, there are now four types of vivaboxes...

  • a Tea Time box complete with a preview of specialty teas for the recipent to sample and choose,
  • two Spa boxes with an assortment of natural bath and body products and a gift card redeemable for luxurious spa services
  • a Gourmet to Your Door box, which includes cloth napkins, silver plated napkin rings and a gourmet menu which the recipient can choose a special meal to be delivered to his/her door.
Vivabox is also launching even more vivaboxes, including a perfume box (with Sephora), a wine box (with Wine Spectator) and a BBQ box (with Omaha Steaks).

What a perfect way to start your Holiday shopping!

Gift cards don't have to be impersonal

Holiday shopping this year hasn't been too bad for me. Maybe that's because I've been buying gift cards. Now, I know what you're going to say; Gift cards are so impersonal. I agree with you 100%.

But I've been thinking that when it comes down to it, it's a heck of a lot easier than spending hours in the mall or online hunting down just the right gift (or so you think), only to have the gift be returned, end up in the closet, or even regifted. Just think about some of the gifts that you received last year that haven't even made their way out of their boxes. Wouldn't you rather have received a gift card so that you can pick out the perfect gift yourself?

And who's to say that gift cards aren't personal? Make them personal. Buying someone a movie gift card? Pick up some of your recipient's favorite movie snacks and make it a gift basket. Make it an IOU for a movie-date. Get creative, get personal.

Fandango even offers gift cards (Fandango Bucks Gift Cards) that can be used at over 15,000 theaters nationwide, so no matter where your recipient lives, they'll be able to find a movie theater nearby. Better yet, you can choose your own card design or even customize your own card.

Nothing says Christmas like Starbuck's holiday cups!

Starbucks Coffees Set of two White and Red Starbucks Cup OrnamentsI love the Starbucks red holiday cup! It's magical. When I see that cup at Starbucks I know it's Christmastime and I get all mushy and in the Christmas spirit.

I discovered these White and Red Starbucks Cup Ornaments on my most recent trip to Starbucks while waiting for my tall decaf non-fat peppermint mocha. What a perfect addition to the tree.

Pick one up at Starbuck's today - makes a nice little addition to a gift card, or as a gift itself.

Get 20% off all orders at StarbucksStore.com (Exp. 12/15/08) and get $5 off your purchase of $30 or more when you use Google Checkout!

It was an Etsy Christmas

This year, in addition to my regular Kaboodle wish list, I also put together an Etsy wishlist that contained only handmade items from Etsy artisans. It was a hit.

My fiance picked out this original "Keeper of Secrets" owl watercolor from Lauren Alexander and then picked out two gorgeous "A Life of Love" and "A Life of Happiness" bird prints as well.

My sister gave me these hope and daisy necklaces and this very beautiful angel inscribed with with "All day...all night...angels are watching over you."

I really enjoy buying from Etsy because I'm supporting independent artists, not huge corporations. Plus, the personal service is beyond compare. My sister couldn't get over the beautiful packaging and personal notes that came with her orders. She's an Etsy convert for life!

Soothe away your worries...

archipelago candle.jpg

I'm a candle lover, as so many of you are. Not only can they soothe the soul, but they can turn an ordinary room into a romantic hideaway or infuse your home with fragrance. The problems I have had with many candles on the market are they do not burn evenly or cleanly, they can sometimes overwhelm a room with thick, fake scents and may only burn for up to 10 hours.

Not Archipelago candles.

Archipelago candles are hand-poured, using fine ingredients and oils. They are more than 50 percent natural soy wax, which allows them to burn longer and cleaner than regular candles.

There are a variety of candle options to choose from, including Archipelago Home, Signature, Excursion and Monogram collections. Scent options are seemingly endless and intoxicating.

You can browse and purchase Archipelago candles online at www.archipelago-usa.com. The website also offers a store locator.

For the sports-fan-bride-to-be

Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, And sporty too!

il_430xN.43194236.jpgIt's possible that you know someone who has either attended a sport theme wedding or was in one.  Some team colors are flattering and don't stand out as an homage to the sport obsession.  Take the Dallas Cowboys for example: Navy and light blue. Very pretty. I was actually in a wedding where we had navy dresses and it was so stunning and classic.

But let's look at the Green Bay Packers: Green and Yellow. Umm, I think not. Did anyone see il_430xN.41952078.jpgthat "That 70s Show" episode when Donna's parents renewed their vows with a Packers theme?  Her bridesmaid dresses were half green, half yellow.  I realize it was the 70s, but you get my point. Who wants to look at their wedding album 10-20-30 years down the road and think "yikes" instead of "aww how beautiful."

So what do you get the die-hard sports fan bride so her pictures don't scream: "I love my team so much I did a theme wedding!"? A sport-theme garter!

Garters by Krisit on Etsy offer football, baseball, hockey, college, basketball and even military theme garters. With each purchase you get 2 items: a keepsake garter with sheer colored organza and the team logo and the toss garter with the team name and colors. And in keeping with the traditional wedding day poem, Kristi has included a "something blue" in every design: a tiny blue bow on the inside of the garter. From $21.99, a garter by Kristi is like your own sexy little secret tribute to your team.

Fresh, happy and natural lip balm for your wrist

The first time I had ever seen a balm style perfume was in the New York City Coach store.  How smart to bottle a perfume in a solid form: still as fragrant as the liquid, but portable and smooth on your skin.

TAHITIAN-SOLID.jpgI had since forgotten about solid perfume until this weekend when I found a new brand called Pacifica at Whole Foods Markets.  A business conceived from a love of blending stunning Earthly scents for candles, Pacifica's solid perfume is made from organic soy and coconut wax and blends of essential and natural oils.

The Tahitian Gardenia, which I tested, was just so lovely. There is no alcohol sting to your senses like many perfumes have when you first apply.  The balm is as smooth as if it was for your lips.  And you don't have to worry about staining your clothes or dousing your body like with a spray; the strength of the perfume is apparent with just a small application with your fingertip.

At only $9, each solid perfume is small enough to fit in your purse or pocket and according to the website, they are fun to mix and match. These would actually make great bridesmaid gifts depending on the wedding theme.  Think of the possibilities with florals, fruits, herbs & spices and woods & resins.  I thinking: Madagascar Spice and Tuscan Blood Orange.  Pacifica also offers candles, perfume sprays, body butter and natural butter with free shipping with orders over $50.

It's graduation season! Gift ideas for high school grads

Next week is the Commencement ceremony for the senior class at the school where I used to work and attend.  Those of you with kids in public high school have to wait a few more weeks to wish your kids well, but you should already be thinking what to give them! And please...no new cars! Most kids can't take them to college anyway! Here are some good gifts to give a graduate(gifts from parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents, friends, etc):

  1. Personalized Grad Throws: These are a great gift that your child can take to college. Either shop from gift.com or see if your school has their own donning the school colors and buildings.

  2. 1 Share of a Blue-Chip Stock: It's a good idea that your child learns how the stock market works and it's more fun to be personally invested, especially in some top companies (just do your research to make sure they are stable in this market). Examples of Stocks: GE, Adobe, Amazon.com, AT&T, Barnes & Noble, eBay, Exxon, Coca-Cola, Gap, and many more.

  3. seuss.jpgOh The Places You Will Go: What is graduation without some wisdom from Dr. Seuss! This is a cute memorabilia piece to send off with any grad. Not only is it full of advice and well wishes, it reminds them of the simpler and more joyful times in their childhood.

  4. Laptop: Some schools give students laptops, but if not, it is a good idea to send your child to school with one. They will be on-the-go a lot and not necessarily working in their dorm room. Take-it from someone who found that working in the school snack bar area was more productive than staying in my quiet room.

  5. Digital Camera: If they don't have one now, they will miss a lot without one in college. There is something memorable happening everyday. Those first few weeks of freshman year are the most photo-worthy. New buildings, new people, orientation activities, everything. And with the laptop, they can upload pictures online and share them with family! My personal recommendation is a Canon PowerShot. I took it to the Derby and got excellent pics out of it.

  6. College Bookstore Gift Cards (I linked to my alma mater as an example): If your child/niece/nephew/grandchild/friend/etc is heading off to college, they will encounter expenditures for textbooks, food, school apparel and the popular "MOM" and "DAD" items. A gift card showing their college logo is exciting, but be careful..it could make you a little sad.

  7. p79270.jpgFor girls: Pandora Charm Bracelet: Start her off with the bracelet and 1 or 2 charms to represent her and her graduation. Pick charms that have relevance to her like a sport, hobby, pet, and/or graduation hat. As the years move on, you can add to it with birthdays, holidays, etc. You can also purchase a special "graduation bracelet" that contain charms with special meanings like Happiness and Four Leaf Clover. Pandora is one of the hottest new bracelet trends.

  8. For boys: Gifts for guys that I find online could really be for either gender (electronics, etc), but here are 2 that I find are favorites with the boys: Video Game Consoles or Collegiate Gear (fleece blanket, hat, sweatshirt, etc), or if they have a car on campus, a custom detailing or new stereo for the car.

  9. If you have an unlimited budget: A very popular (if you can afford it) gift is the Euro-Pass trip for your child with his or her friends. Traveling to over 20 countries by train for under $500 is a pretty sweet deal! Another gift that grandparents often give is a trip of his or her choice (with the grandparents of course).
Congrats graduates!

Express yourself with your laptop

dandielion_magenta_laptop_skins.jpgConverse sneakers. Vera Bradley bag. Ugg boots. Graphic t-shirt. Troll-bead bracelet.

Our clothing and accessories will always act like an extension of our style and personality. But these days, with the explosion of social networking like Facebook and Twitter, it's all about what electronic device you carry.

iPhone or Blackberry? Mac or PC? iPod Nano? Flip?

How can you stand out in a sea of black, grey and white machines? With a Schticker!

Put your funky style or quirky sense of humor on display with the easy to apply and remove vinyl stickers for laptops or iPhones. With an assortment of textured, floral, patterned, animal print and custom designs, Schtickers will make a statement before you have to!

And if you're like me and like to mix styles, they are inexpensive to collect and easy to switch around. My personal favorites are the Custom Monogram (for my preppy side) and the Dandelion (for the IKEA/Crate & Barrel side of me).

If the preset designs don't speak to you, there is a custom option where you can set up background colors, text and graphics and even upload your own photos or graphics. The custom option would be a great opportunity to create a Schticker with your business logo or get personal with family images.

And speaking of family, Schtickers make great recession-friendly gifts for your techie loved ones which prices starting at $12.49 for iPod/iPones and $19.99 for laptops.

To start browsing or designing, visit Schtickers.com.
