For a Cause Archives

Shop For a Cure

Over the past few years I've noticed a huge trend - companies selling "pink" items in October and donating a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research. I think this is pretty darn cool - being given the opportunity to shop for a cause.

Think Pink BraceletIn honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in addition to all the cool stuff we post every day, we're going to post great items that will also let you shop your support for the cause and donate toward it.

Red Envelope (one of my favorite on-line stores) has a whole page of pretty pink items that you can purchase to support breast cancer support. This bracelet here is one of my favorite breast cancer support items on the site.

To see Red Envelope's "Think Pink" collection, visit the link below"

We also encourage you to visit Komen web site and donate directly to the cause.

Toast to a Cause!

061012-sofia.jpgHave I mentioned that I love the bubbly? There's nothing better, I tell ya. So, when I heard about these little cans of sparkling wine, I just had to try it myself. The people at Francis Ford Coppola were kind enough to send me a sample and boy was I surprised when I opened an entire bottle. Of course I couldn't devour the whole bottle by myself (which is why I love the idea of the single-serving can), so I brought the bottle to a party and shared it with the girls. It was a huge hit, even with girls who don't normally care for white wine or Champagne! I found it light with a touch of sweetness and just the right amount of sparkle.

061012-o.jpg'Scuse me, I'm off to pick me up a four-pack. The boys have beer - I'll have my bubbles! And since cans can be unsightly, I've discovered these adorable limited edition, Riedel Pink 'O' Champagne glasses. Not only are these cute as can be, but they're for a cause - 15% of all proceeds will be donated to the Living Beyond Breast Cancer Foundation and shipping is free!

Might as well face it I'm addicted to...lotion!

061005-aveda.jpgMaybe it's age, maybe it's habit, maybe it's my neurotic side showing, but I have to put lotion every time I wash my hands. While hanging with my cousin this weekend, I offered her some lotion, because manners dictate that much like gum or mints, if you take out lotion, you have to offer it to everyone. My cousin partook of some of my Aveda Hand Relief lotion and was immediately shocked by how smooth it made her hands feel. I find it a bit pricey at $20 for 5oz. but I'm willing to pay for quality. Pick up the limited-edition Pink Ribbon Hand Relief and $4 goes to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Get smooth hands and help find a cure for Breast Cancer; two birds, one stone!

Beauty for a Buck

I've seen it around (in practically every magazine I read) but for some reason I never visited the site until my cousin raved about it. Like me, she's a bargain shopper, so when she happened upon e.l.f., she just had to share.

e.l.f. (eye lips face) is a cosmetics brand that is the uber bargain - every item is just $1. Now, this is no dollar-store quality make-up, oh no. This stuff is great quality, there's a huge selection and it's cheap!

Check out this Color Therapy Kit for just $10 with 20% of proceeds going to Women's Informational Network Against Breast Cancer. A cute bag and a ton of pink goodies for a good cause. Go ahead. You know you want to!

Dress for a Cause for Sara Campbell

070911 004On Monday night I attended my first fashion show, ever. I know, I know, it's hard to believe, but it's true.

It was an amazing experience. Ms. Magno and I met up at The Boston Harbor Hotel to attend the Dress for a Cause fashion show, hosted by and featuring clothing by Sara Campbell.

I'm glad I was able to attend this as my first fashion show, not only because of the absolutely wonderful clothing by Sara Campbell, but for the cause we were all there supporting - Breast Cancer. So many of us have been touched by the disease - whether we ourselves have been diagnosed, or a family or friend. I, too, have been touched by it personally - my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor - and it's a cause I hold dear to my heart.

What made the even more special, were the models - many of them cancer survivors or closely involved in the cure for cancer. There was not a dry eye in the house! Go ladies!

Proceeds from the show and 100% of the profits of a handful of special products will go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In addition, 10% of all sales during the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) at Sara Campbell will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and customers also receive 10% off anything pink!

If you're in the area, stop by the Sara Campbell store in Boston's South End. If not, take a look at the items for sale on the Sara Campbell web site. After seeing all the wonderful clothes, I'd say that Sara Campbell clothes were cheerful, bright, and stunning! I definitely want one of every item I saw. But don't trust me. Take a look for yourself:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink RibbonOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and here at A Girl Must Shop we'll be focusing on companies who donate a portion of the sales of their products to breast cancer research.

Did you know:

  • The National Cancer Institute estimates that a woman in the United States has a 1 in 8 chance of developing invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. This risk was about 1 in 11 in 1975.
  • More women in the United States are living with breast cancer than any other cancer (excluding skin cancer). Approximately 3 million women in the U.S. are living with breast cancer: about 2.3 million have been diagnosed with the disease and an estimated 1 million do not yet know they have the disease.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and worldwide (excluding skin cancer). In 2007, it is estimated that 240,510 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States: 178,480 invasive breast cancers and 62,030 cases of in situ breast cancer (of which, 85% will be ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)).

Breast cancer has touched so many of us, whether we ourselves have been diagnosed, or a friend or family member. Please take a moment and visit these organizations that are dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer, and if you can afford it, please make a donation.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure
National Breast Cancer Foundation
Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization
Living Beyond Breast Cancer

Please feel free to let us know about any more organizations that we should list here.

Thank you,
The girls at A Girl Must Shop

Soothing Dry Hands for The Cure

avedapinkribbon.jpgI was cursed with my father's dry skin.  The colder the weather gets the worse my hands get...and being a germophobe who washes my hands a gazillion times a day doesn't help either.  About a year ago I was introduced to Aveda's Hand Relief.  It works wonders on my poor dry hands and I love the scent.  I was thrilled when I logged onto get a new tube to find that Aveda has a special Pink Ribbon Edition of their Hand Relief- with $4.00 of every purchase going to the Breast Cancer Research Fund.  Now I can help a great cause while moisturizing my hands and so can you!

Hard Rockin' to Stop Breast Cancer For Life

Hard Rock Cafe Breast CancerAnyone who knows me knows I am a rocker chick at heart...give me some fast guitars and long haired boys and I am all over it.  In planning a trip to Los Angeles, I wanted to see if anything cool was going on at The Hard Rock Cafe this month and was happy to find that the Hard Rock Cafe is joining the fight to stop breast cancer with Rocktober: Think Pink To Find a Cure.  If you stop in at your local Hard Rock you can have a drink from the Think Pink drink collection (there is even a non-alcoholic one- for the designated driver of the group) and a portion of the proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

However- the coolest thing about Rocktober's Think Pink To Find A Cure? Is the limited edition Hard Rock Breast Cancer Awareness Pin.   The Hard Rock is famous for their pins...and this one is perfect! Not only is it cute (a pink guitar? I am all over that!) but 100% of the net profits go to the Breast Cancer Research Fund.  That is right...100%- you can't go wrong there. I am picking up one of these today online today before they run out!

Think Pink with RedEnvelope

Red Envelope Pink Ribbon Collection RedEnvelope is one of my very-favorite online shops for gifts. All of their items are great quality and come in beautiful red packaging. Definitely keep them in mind for your Christmas shopping. You won't be disappointed.

One of the best things about Red Envelope is that they were one of the first online retailers to donate proceeds of breast cancer awareness products to the cause. They're currently offering thirty products whose proceeds will be donated to the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Women Cancer Research Fund.

What's even better is the products are unique and diverse; they have pink ribbon branded items, but they also offer non branded items like jewelry and plants. Be sure to check out the entire collection.

Give the Gift of Sustainability

Beatrice's Goat My mom works as a librarian in an elementary school and occasionally she gets overwhelmed so I help shelve books on the weekend.  While helping my mother (a librarian) put away books recently, I found a book called Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier.  I sat down and read the story (I love children's books, so this happens often when I am helping).  The book is a wonderfully uplifting and touching story of a girl in poverty stricken rural Uganda.  She dreams of going to school but knows her family will never be able to afford the supplies to go to school.

This all changes one day when Beatrice and her mom travel to a drop off point for a relief organization (Heifer International) who gives the family a pregnant goat.  One single goat changes the entire financial outlook for the family.  The book details how the gift of one goat helps the family not only financially but educationally too.

heifer_lg.jpg This got me looking into Heifer.org.  Through their gift catalog you can give the gift of a goat (or even just a part of a goat if you can't afford a whole goat), pig, or even a flock of chicks or a hive of bees.  These would make excellent Christmas gifts for the person who has everything....they have card inserts that you can print out telling your recipient about the gift you gave in their honor...and what that gift will mean to the actual recipient.  Or if your prefer you can send an official Heifer.org ecard announcing your gift. This literally, is the gift that keeps on giving.
