Stay on Course with This Cool Compass Necklace

In one of my favorite movies, "Contact," Matthew McConaughey gives Jodie Foster a compass necklace that he finds inside a Cracker Jack box. Throughout the movie, she holds on to it and it seems to guide in her the right direction.
Maybe I'm a total cheeseball, but I was always touched by this, and when I stumbled upon an identical compass necklace at one of my favorite on-line stores, Uncommon Goods, I just knew I had to have it. Now I can pretend that Matthew McConaughey gave it to me, and I'll never get lost in life.
By the way, if you haven't seen the movie, you should go out and rent it tonight, it's great. Mr. McConaughey is looking pretty fine! (And so is Ms. Foster, if she's more to your taste!)

Simply the cutest bracelets ever
Especially if you are the girly-girl type and like to have sparkly adornment that is unique and playful. I was first introduced to these lucite gems by my childhood friend who lives around the corner from the Los Angeles boutique that bears the designer’s name—on the famed Melrose Ave., of course. You can pick from basic cube-looking lucite crystals in a variety of stellar colors and some, my friends, include Hello Kitty or Barbie embellishments! Your wrists will never be the same.
Did I mention that these must-haves are pretty dear? Meaning this isn’t your Target kind of find. Starting at $38 and going to three digits, they’ll take a few weeks allowance!

Shine On In This Instant Karma Necklace
According to wikipedia, Karma is simply the golden rule: you reap what you sow, or what you give out is what you receive back - whether this relates to a past/future life situation or to the present date.
I'm a big fan of Karma - I believe if I do good for others, then good things will eventually circle around to come back to me. Of course, even I need a little reminder once in a while, and this charming Karma necklace is perfect for just that!

Shop For a Cure
Over the past few years I've noticed a huge trend - companies selling "pink" items in October and donating a portion of the proceeds to breast cancer research. I think this is pretty darn cool - being given the opportunity to shop for a cause.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in addition to all the cool stuff we post every day, we're going to post great items that will also let you shop your support for the cause and donate toward it.
Red Envelope (one of my favorite on-line stores) has a whole page of pretty pink items that you can purchase to support breast cancer support. This bracelet here is one of my favorite breast cancer support items on the site.
To see Red Envelope's "Think Pink" collection, visit the link below"
We also encourage you to visit Komen web site and donate directly to the cause.

Bananas not included
Turn one of the childhood games of your youth into a stylish fashion accessory with this sterling silver Barrel O' Monkeys necklace. If you ask me, someone should make an entire line of jewelry based on old kids' games from the 70s and 80s. They should make a Cootie, a Mr. Potato Head, and an Atari 2600 joystick, for starters. Collect em! Trade em! Hey, why hasn't anybody from Hasbro called me lately???? I got a million ideas for ya! :)

A little treat for yourself during holiday season
I came across this adorably cheerful beaded necklace the other day on Etsy.com. For those of you who don't know Etsy - it's an on-line store where you can buy or sell handmade items. I'm addicted to this place. Now, I'm not a really crafty person - I can design for the web, but I can't knit or sew or wield a glue gun, but boy can I appreciate handmade stuff. And if this necklace doesn't do it for you check out some other items from the same handcrafter from belgium with love.

Simple, unique and affordable
While drooling over the sheets I recently wrote about, I came across this fancy-cut rose quartz ring. The unique sterling silver setting immediately caught my eye. I love the swirls that hold the stone and it's a great bargain at 84% off retail. I immediately added it to my wish list!

A Girl Loves Diamonds
Most of you don't know that I was li'l miss jewelry sales girl in college. I loved it. Of course I spent half of my paycheck on jewelry, but it was a fun job! Certainly my knowledge of jewelry was greatly expanded, and has thus made me the go-to person for all my friends and family on everything jewelry-related. I guess you could call me a jewelry snob.
Last week the people at Helzberg Diamonds offered to send me a diamond necklace to review on this site. Well of course I said yes, but I wasn't expecting much since the necklace that they were sending retailed for $149.99. Yesterday the FedEx man dropped off a box with this absolutely gorgeous necklace and I was tickled pink! It is not what I thought a $149.99 diamond necklace would look like.
This necklace is a 1/4 carat of really nice quality diamonds set in 10kt white gold on a strong box-link chain. I liked it so much I tried it on immeditately and didn't take it off until this morning when I lent it to fellow-contributor Tara to wear (and show off) for the day.
It's the best bargain I've seen all season and I would be tickled pink to find this in my stocking. I do wish I could say that this necklace is mine to keep, but that wouldn't be fair to any of you! So, I'm going to give it away to one lucky subscriber in our February newsletter. So, if you haven't subscribed, do so now and tell all your friends!
And say thanks to the lovely people at Helzberg Diamonds!

Who says there's no such thing as perfection?
Not I, that's for sure!
This necklace, called Pink Perfection, is every bit pink and perfect! I just love the combination of pink mother of pearl and the jazzy little star charm on a sterling silver chain. The pink makes it so versatile, I wore it with a few different outfits and got tons of compliments.
But I won't be keeping this lovely necklace. Nope! I'm giving it away to one random subscriber in the January Newsletter. Haven't signed up yet? Whatcha waiting for!?

You wouldn't wear em together ... or WOULD you?
The second I saw this Choco-licious Bracelet at the Pixelgirl Shop I wanted to just eat it up. That could become a problem, but a problem i'm willing to face.
This lovely Green Olive Bracelet is perfect for those nights where only a dirty martini will do! I think I shall!

Never underestimate the power of pearls
I had to admit that I'm not a huge fashionista. *Gasp!* Yes, I know it's shocking, but I've never quite had the knack for putting sassy outfits together and downright terrible at choosing the right accessories. Well, perhaps I'm just being harsh on myself.
For Christmas me Mum picked up this adorable little Freshwater Cultured Pearl Strand and Bracelet Set (a HUGE bargain at $36.99 and only $2.95 for shipping!) off of my wishlist. Being a huge fan of Jackie O, I had always loved the idea of pearls and added them to my wishlist on a whim. Boy am I glad I did. I totally underestimated what a simple pair of pearls can do to an outfit! They instantly add class to even a pair of jeans and t-shirt.
They've also restored my faith in my ability to accessorize.

NOVICA? NOVICA!
We want to give artists and artisans around the world a global platform to express their true artistic talents and to spur their creativity. And, we want to provide you with access to unique, hard-to-find items at great values that only the Internet infrastructure can allow.
I stumbled upon Novica looking for a silver bracelet and spent nearly an hour going through all the designers items. Wow. I don't usually wear jewelry, so when I'm in the mood to find something I need variety for I am one picky customer. I found a ton of jewelry that I was instantly drawn to and the prices aren't bad either. And I DID find the bracelet, isn't is just gorgeous?
Oh and sheesh I forgot to mention they have a ton of home decor and apparel too!

By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea!
I'm crazy for sea glass! It brings back fond memories of walking along the beach; finding pieces of sea glass were like finding treasure...I still have a collection.
White Light Productions makes beautiful sea glass earrings, bracelets & necklaces; some glass pieces are square shaped, others rectangular, still others triangular. They come in a variety of colors and styles...check them out!
I know I'll be wearing the earrings I got to work tomorrow...and I fully expect to get many compliments!

I know of such a place, a place far, far away...
Expensive but elegant, these pendants by SpoonFed Art tell a story all of their own. This particular one that I have featured reminds me of a far away place, almost magical where it's quiet and you might hear the flutter of a fairy! The interesting part? They are all made from spoons! Yes, spoons! They are all beautiful and unique! The cost? Yes, usually I would not spend this much on a pendant but there always seems to be that one special occasion when you or someone you know deserves something very special! As I looked at each one it was like reading a story. Put your imagination to the test! Try it! Mention Health Magazine when ordering for a 10% discount.

Preppy-licious
I came across this pendant at a vendor shopping extravaganza. Erin and I immediately fell in love with Initial Reactions products and both purchased a necklace. The pendant is heavy weight sterling silver with your initial that may also have a special message or date added to the reverse side. I love that you can also choose whether or not you want a tie or toggle ribbon and the ribbon selection is endless. One piece of silver offers so many options it's almost to hard too choose.

I went ga-ga for this pretty little Blue & Green Art Glass Lariat Necklace that joins two perfect hearts join together. The gleaming silver chain is beaded by cheerful pearls and faceted pink and purple crystal, leading to two radiant hearts. Isn't it just the cutest thing?

Starlight, starbright...
This lovely handmade sterling silver pendant is hand-sawn, soldered and topped with various sized sterling stars for a beautifully simple design suitable for everyday wear. The piece is oxidized and buffed leaving behind a great depth and texture to the pendant. It glides freely over an 18 inch sterling ball chain.
I love that this is a custom piece and you add as many stars as you want. The pendant was originally designed to represent the members of the family, but the stars can represent anything you want them to. To me, they're wishes. Which ones? I'll never tell!

What’s In Your Bubble?
I just received my glass bubble pendant necklace in the mail and I love it! I opted for the custom bubble which allows you to pick a word, up to seven letters, from the dictionary. Is your word bigger than seven letters? No problem, they will create it with a combination of two! The size is perfect-> not too big and it hangs just right! Not in the mood for words? They also have dictionary bugs and vintage sheet music. As for my bubble I chose something that I deeply believe in….Karma! Yes, cause & effect and now I have a little reminder keep me in check. Thanks Junxtaposition!

Rings for the ears? What will they think of next?
You know just the other day I was saying to myself, "Megan, we don't feature enough earrings on A Girl Must Shop." I had a good point.
I have a huge weakness for earrings, I'm always on the look-out for the perfect pair. These just might be it. Made by Agapantha, these Osmara Flower Earrings are the perfect combination of simple yet dazzling. You love them, I know!
What's Agapantha, you say? According to the web site, it's the first flower that the designer's (Dani) mother and grandmother taught her how to say. What a great name for a company.
Now, go on and scoop up some of her fabulous jewels - they're going like hotcakes!

Special Delivery- FLOWERS (for your ears)
Ooooh, so pretty! I think the picture says it all! When I first saw these earrings they immediately reminded me of the flower, Lily Of The Valley. The meaning of this flower? "You will find happiness." I think I already have with these earrings :) What a great fashion statement for Spring! The white/black contrast really makes them stand out and their handmade from Czech glass. These Vintage White Bells, created by Jewli, are available at Etsy for a mere $12!

On Watch For Watches!
Yes, I wear a watch everyday and It feels weird if I don't. I think it's it's a case where some people wear them and some people do not. I have to! I currently have one that has interchangeable bands and it has just about had it. So, the search for a watch began and ended quickly! I love Fossil Watches and started there first. The majority of all my watches have been Fossil and I like that they are well made and hold up through time. This Tortoise Style Watch is my favorite and is on my list of priority must-haves. The price is my least favorite part but if I only have to buy a watch every couple of years then why not! It even matches my sunglasses -0-0- :)

This is me, smiling ear to ear!
Every once in a while I happen upon and item that is so "me" that I just can't let it go. This smiley face necklace is one of those things. Laurie at Sweet Tooth emailed me one day and offered to send me a sample necklace. Since receiving it, it hasn't left my neck. Now, we usually give away all of our samples at A Girl Must Shop, but I have to tell you it's not looking like this one is going to leave my neck.
It's the perfect little expression of glee and comes with a great chain with one of my favorite toggle clasps and has the most adorable little beaded details.
Don't look so glum, chum! Hop on over the Sweet Tooth and grab one for yourself. They come in all kinds of adorable designs. Check it!

Who Cares?
Bella! Bella Of Cape Cod cares! I saw this heart toggle bracelet and knew that I would like one. The best part is that 100% of the proceeds from this bracelet benefit an organization called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Gone.....but not forgotten!
The beautiful cherry blossoms! Yes, there here and then their gone. It's almost a magical time of year when they bloom and yet I've never taken the time to travel to see them in full bloom. I love that time of year because everyone is excited and it's all you hear about on the news. I was looking at necklaces the other day and when I saw this one, "Cherry Blossoms on Ice." Flip flop you don't stop!
I'm not going to name any names ahemJanetahem, but I have a friend who is a little bit out of wack. So out of wack, in fact, that she can't even wear a watch. True! Every time she wears a watch it stops working. I think it's some kind of mystical powers. I'm sure she would agree.
Well, I came across the perfect watch for her that isn't worn on the wrist - nope, you can hang it from pretty much anything, but I think she'd hang it off her purse. This adorable Hang Time Flip Flop Watch was made for her. We were out shopping last night and she confessed to buying five pair of flip flops so far this year.
"I'm going to have to move to Hawaii," she said.
I begged her not to leave me behind.

A Medley of Color
Ladies, I just found a new little treasure – a beautiful four-strand 17" leather choker with the gold plated or sterling silver clasps clasp closure.
You can wear it with the pendants or just like that - as a choker-necklace. I personally prefer it without pendant. It is beautiful as is and easy on the wallet at a sweet $20.
The girl who makes it, her name is Lana Barakat, (who spent some time in our home town of Boston in her college years) also makes a ton of other cool jewelry. You can check it out at Lazuli Jewelry.com

Ooh! Those lips! When I saw this necklace at Jules Smith Designs it brought a smile to my face. I don't think I have ever seen "lips" dangling from a chain!
This particular necklace is the petite version and is about an inch across. The name of this sexy necklace? Kiss Kiss!
It just so happens that their located in the US Virgin Islands -> Guess who will be checking that out! You got it, ME! ;) If you like your lips a little more plumper, try the larger version of Kiss Kiss!

Something monthly you'll be sure to enjoy!
Sign up now at Designing Diva for the Earring of the Month Club! Choose between a three, six, or twelve month membership and receive beautiful handcrafted earrings like these! The inspiration behind these little treasures tells her story here and it is very interesting! I often wonder how these artists get their ideas and now I know. From the mouth of the Diva herself, here are the questions & answers!
Q: Designing Diva: What are your favorite earrings that you have created and why?A: Bling earrings. These earrings use one of my favorite chainmaille techniques, byzantine or bird cage, with these amazing faceted clear AB faceted swarovski crystals that are an unusual shape. These unique and sparkly earrings are a classy way to "bling out"
Q: Designing Diva: What & Where inspires you most when creating your jewelry?
A: Everything and anything that I see. My brain will look at a building, a tree, a _____(you fill the blank) and my mind will start whirling on how I can translate that into a piece of jewelry. It gives me a starting point and as an artist it is my interpretation/vision of the world-my voice-unique !
For example, these retro earrings were inspired by watching my kids swing on tires at the park. Whilst on a camping trip, I wanted to capture a green river running through a canyon so I baked up this glass pendant.

Knock! Knock!
"Who's there?"
"It's the Avon lady!"
Ok, that's not quite how it happened, times have changed! As usual I was checking out the fashions around me when I spotted this watch on a co-worker. It was one of those things that I knew immediately I had to have. When I asked her where she got it she told me she got it from Avon. Problem: I don't know anyone that sells Avon. Solution: I went straight home and ordered it online, of course with a few other things, and got free shipping! Yippee! Entitled, Starfish Watch, it reminds me of my recent snorkeling adventures in the Virgin Islands. What a way to relive my vacation and for only $19.99! For the free shipping I had to spend $25 and that was easy... I got some lip balm, lip gloss, and waterproof mascara! I think I like this Avon thing!

I am addicted to Black Mountain Gallery. Just say no to twee
I was at my favorite jewelery store last weekend picking up an order, and I was reminded of my latest purchase there - the large Fayeth" pendant. I am usually not into hearts; I find them twee. This one? Not twee. Just lovely.
[Editor's note: I just HAD to look up twee because I had no idea what it was. Wiktionary defines is as "overly quaint, dainty, cute or nice."]
All jewelry from Black Mountain Gallery is handmade in Chapel Hill, NC. Most of it is (and all of my pieces are) sterling silver, but they also have gold and have recently added copper. (I covet these copper feather earrings.) The store has two 50% off sales each year where everything is half-price, but there are 50% off web specials year-round.

Jewelry by Jessica (My idol!)
It's been a while since we posted a piece of jewelry, no? Well, here's Jessica to the rescue. Folks, let me tell you that Jessica is my idol. Just take a look at this picture of her sitting on the funkiest YELLOW couch (is that plastic?) I've ever seen, surrounded by wicked art on the walls. She's also WICKED talented. Check out this wicked necklace on her site. And she makes it with her own bare hands:
Each piece of jewelry is made from clear shrink plastic: I cut the plastic, draw on it, bake it, paint it and varnish it all with my own two mitts! Pendants are hung on 17" leather cording. Because each piece is cut and drawn by hand, each piece is one-of-a-kind with slight variations in shape, size and design.
I've finally come to terms with the fact that I was put on this earth to admire art - not to make it - and I'm just fine with that. So long as there are people like Jessica out there to keep making stuff to admire.

Hard Rockin' to Stop Breast Cancer For Life
Anyone who knows me knows I am a rocker chick at heart...give me some fast guitars and long haired boys and I am all over it. In planning a trip to Los Angeles, I wanted to see if anything cool was going on at The Hard Rock Cafe this month and was happy to find that the Hard Rock Cafe is joining the fight to stop breast cancer with Rocktober: Think Pink To Find a Cure. If you stop in at your local Hard Rock you can have a drink from the Think Pink drink collection (there is even a non-alcoholic one- for the designated driver of the group) and a portion of the proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
