Knock knock, KnickKnock!

If you're like me, you're not much of a library goer. I like to have my own books. This way, if I love them, I can pick them up anytime and curl up with them on rainy afternoons. Or, if I hate them, I can throw them across the room, or perhaps even burn them, without worrying about having to account for the damage. As the book buyer, I've become known among my friends as the person to Borrow Books From. Usually I get them back.. but once in a while, they're gone for good.

KnickKnock Personal Library KitEnter KnickKnock and their Personal Library Kit. All of the tools a real library uses - pockets, cards, stamps, even "Reference Only" stickers! The only downside is, there are only 30 envelopes per kit - and I have considerably more books than that. Still, if you can get the most frequently borrowed books encoded and ensure they're returned, it'll be worth your while!

KnickKnock Takeout Menu OrganizerKnickKnock has other brilliant items too. For a busy lass like yourself who doesn't always have time to whip up a five course dinner with wine and espresso, the Takeout Menu Organizer ensures that not only will you always be able to find the menu and phone number for that kickass Thai place down the road - you'll also be able to organize all your menus into types of cuisine, take notes of when you ordered from where and how good the service was, and get tips on tipping. What could be better?

Great Ideas NotepadA Great Idea notepad, that's what! It's happened to us all... in the middle of a busy day, you think of a Great Idea, but you're too busy/stressed/pen and paperless to write it down. No more! The Great Idea pad not only gives you a place to record your creations, it also gives you a spot to rate your idea's greatness, record the next steps and note whether you acted on it. Now that's a great idea.

If The Shoe Fits...

Dansko Shoesand it's comfortable, looks good and you can work loooong hours without your feet killing you, BUY THEM! I consider myself a good judge of shoes because I often spend many hours on my feet. I bought my first pair of Dansko shoes a few years back and they're amazing! They do require a brief "break-in" process because the shoe actually molds to the shape of your foot. My top two fall picks? Yes, I would like two pairs-> Dansko Mandolin & Dansko Myla! And to top it off, they have the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association. I consider my feet very important and I like to treat them good! Available online at Onlineshoes.com with free shipping! I signed up for their email and just received a $10 off online coupon for Dankso shoes!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink RibbonOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and here at A Girl Must Shop we'll be focusing on companies who donate a portion of the sales of their products to breast cancer research.

Did you know:

  • The National Cancer Institute estimates that a woman in the United States has a 1 in 8 chance of developing invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. This risk was about 1 in 11 in 1975.
  • More women in the United States are living with breast cancer than any other cancer (excluding skin cancer). Approximately 3 million women in the U.S. are living with breast cancer: about 2.3 million have been diagnosed with the disease and an estimated 1 million do not yet know they have the disease.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and worldwide (excluding skin cancer). In 2007, it is estimated that 240,510 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States: 178,480 invasive breast cancers and 62,030 cases of in situ breast cancer (of which, 85% will be ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)).

Breast cancer has touched so many of us, whether we ourselves have been diagnosed, or a friend or family member. Please take a moment and visit these organizations that are dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer, and if you can afford it, please make a donation.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure
National Breast Cancer Foundation
Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization
Living Beyond Breast Cancer

Please feel free to let us know about any more organizations that we should list here.

Thank you,

Digital Prints Worth Paying For

Puzzles_01.jpgI love to take pictures. I usually carry my digital camera in my purse with me at all times so I am ready to snap pictures at a moment's notice. Last year I decided to enter some of my pictures in the county fair. I did pretty good (got an honorable mention) but I was displeased with the service I used to print my pictures.

This year when fair time came around again- I used a difference service: Mpix.com and let me tell you what a difference! First of all, Mpix.com offers many different finishes and photo touches for your digital prints. They aren't over priced (about the same for the other service I used). Your order is shipped promptly and well packaged. The "other" service I used? Sent the photos in an envelope and by the time they had made the journey to my mailbox- they were fairly mangled. Mpix ships their photos in sturdy, strong boxes. They also offer neat products like pressbooks, statuettes and puzzles made out of your photos- all of which would make great gifts for family during the upcoming holiday season!!

Jewelry by Jessica (My idol!)

070925-jessica.pngIt's been a while since we posted a piece of jewelry, no? Well, here's Jessica to the rescue. Folks, let me tell you that Jessica is my idol. Just take a look at this picture of her sitting on the funkiest YELLOW couch (is that plastic?) I've ever seen, surrounded by wicked art on the walls. She's also WICKED talented. Check out this wicked necklace on her site. And she makes it with her own bare hands:

Each piece of jewelry is made from clear shrink plastic: I cut the plastic, draw on it, bake it, paint it and varnish it all with my own two mitts! Pendants are hung on 17" leather cording. Because each piece is cut and drawn by hand, each piece is one-of-a-kind with slight variations in shape, size and design.

I've finally come to terms with the fact that I was put on this earth to admire art - not to make it - and I'm just fine with that. So long as there are people like Jessica out there to keep making stuff to admire.

Oodles of Noodles!

udon2.jpgI'm always on a mission to find the best noodles; I can't get enough. I know this is terrible to admit, but I really like the Ramen noodles that are 6 for $1.00 from the grocery store.

I also love to use chopsticks, it's so much fun, but I am no expert and eating noodles with the chops is for experienced users.

I came across the Peaceful Company's site and fell in love with these noodle bowls - they are the perfect way so showcase my noodle creations!

I am thinking it's time to grab some water chestnuts, pea pods, straw mushroom and get to boiling up a noodle concoction. Just perfect for a chilly fall evening!

Udon Noodle Bowl $28.00

This chopstick dinnerbowl is simple, stylish and ergonomic.
Complete with chopsticks.
Each bowl is individually hand-thrown.

Oh, Doctor Perricone, you're wonderful!

070926-perricone.jpgRecently, I had a mini facial with products from N.V. Perricone MD. As the woman who was performing the facial and I were talking, I mentioned that I had recently turned 50 and had noticed significant changes to my skin tone but that I wasn't interested in using Botox or under going plastic surgery. She told me that these products were developed specifically for this reason.

We started off with a delicious power drink made from Super Berry Powder, a mixture of blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries and acai (ah-sigh-ee) which is the high energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree and tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. This drink contains high amounts of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

Then the esthetician put some Synergy, An Anti-Aging Aromatic on my finger and asked me to dab a bit under my nose. This product claims to increase your sense of well-being thereby counteracting the negative by-products of stress. Well...I was photographing a wedding that evening and I have to say, it was so much less stressful than normal. I felt much more at ease.

Next up was Firming Facial Toner, which helps reduce excess oil and debris on the skin's surface, while helping the skin appear more firm.

After the toner, she applied Neuropeptide Eye Area Contour, which hydrates, contours and firms the eye area.

She followed this with Amine Complex Face Lift, which increases firmness and tone and gives a healthy radiant glow.

She also applied some Lip Plumper, which is applied not only to the lips, but to the skin around them.

To finish up, she applied some Ceramic Skin Smoother, which prepares your face for makeup.

These products are all pretty expensive, but...they're MUCH less expense and less intrusive than surgery, and I have to say, they really DO work! At the wedding I went to, my friends all said, WOW! You look great! Did you do something new, new makeup, what?

Give it a try, if like me, you're aging but don't want to look your age!

I'm hitched

M771_128.jpgI am hitched and have some fabulous stuff to review. I love products so instead of hiring someone I decided to do my hair and make-up myself, that way, I can keep all my own products. First was some unbelievable foundation I found. I have freckles but didn't want to cover them, I didn't want to look painted; I wanted to be me just a little brighter! MAC makes a great lightweight foundation that felt great on my skin.
P190032_hero.jpg
For my lips, well that was a bit of a challenge. I have a really hard time liking any color on my lips. After trying  about twenty different shades and textures I found Stila Long Wear Lip Color; exquisite. It feels awesome, not like most long wear lipsticks that are thick, tacky or cakey.
41WA5MR7M2L._AA280_.jpg
Next was the hard part, my hair. I wanted to leave my hair down but had no idea how to get that cool wavy beach hair. A friend recommended the Revlon Hair Waver. I'll be honest when I opened this up I was apprehensive; it looks like an assault weapon! My bff came over and did a test run and it worked fabulously. Combined with Redken Hair starch It created just the look I was hoping for.
yhst-46865312611140_1971_1332357208.gif

Lastly was the fragrance. Stacked Style Carnival Crush.  Sent of  peaches and Jasmine, light, fruity and clean. It's my favorite.

Hard Rockin' to Stop Breast Cancer For Life

Hard Rock Cafe Breast CancerAnyone who knows me knows I am a rocker chick at heart...give me some fast guitars and long haired boys and I am all over it.  In planning a trip to Los Angeles, I wanted to see if anything cool was going on at The Hard Rock Cafe this month and was happy to find that the Hard Rock Cafe is joining the fight to stop breast cancer with Rocktober: Think Pink To Find a Cure.  If you stop in at your local Hard Rock you can have a drink from the Think Pink drink collection (there is even a non-alcoholic one- for the designated driver of the group) and a portion of the proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

However- the coolest thing about Rocktober's Think Pink To Find A Cure? Is the limited edition Hard Rock Breast Cancer Awareness Pin.   The Hard Rock is famous for their pins...and this one is perfect! Not only is it cute (a pink guitar? I am all over that!) but 100% of the net profits go to the Breast Cancer Research Fund.  That is right...100%- you can't go wrong there. I am picking up one of these today online today before they run out!

Swag Bag With Style

I'm not a fan of the word "swag" itself - it just isn't very pretty, now, is it? - but the whole concept of "free" stuff makes it easier to take. Who doesn't love free stuff? Party favors? Door prizes? I'm in, with the occasional exception for that which is truly useless or just not my thing.

This summer at the BlogHer conference, I hit the jackpot, just for showing up. I got a Casauri laptop tote bag, quite simply one of the most functional and attractive accessories I have ever owned, courtesy of AOL Body. (They want me to "blog on the go". Get it? Anyway, thanks AOL Body. Got it covered.)

CasauriStripe.jpg Function is admittedly my priority in this case. My MacBook Pro goes most places with me now that I've gone back to graduate school. These babies aren't cheap - and the information I have stored on it is priceless. Still, most of the bags I found, even in the hip Mac universe, were unattractive, or still too heavy, or both.

The Casauri bag is an excellent solution that doesn't require me to sacrifice style on any level.

CasauriWeekender.jpgThis is no surprise, because sisters and co--founders Helena and Emily McHugh are behind the line. Helena is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and Emily hatched the business plan as a project at Columbia University's Business School. One of their bags was the first laptop case ever sold at the MoMA Design Store in New York. Not a bad place to break new ground.

I can't find the exact bag I now carry anywhere online, so it might have been a discontinued or limited-edition item. It has a generously padded inner pocket for my computer, as well as ample room for my charger and even my cell phone and a notebook. It's still made of material lightweight enough to keep it easy on my back, as long as I don't give in to the urge to stuff more of my, er, stuff in it! The other options look equally user-friendly, and I'm especially loving  the stripe patterns.

The company's fall specials are worth checking out, and include the green weekend tote pictured here, as well as other selections from their laptop case, carry-on luggage, and gadget accessory lines.

Luna Boston and Careerbags.com have some of their bags on sale now, and CNET offers a review of one of the laptop totes.

Crabtree & Evelyn Goatmilk - The ultimate comfort for dry skin

Crabtree & Evelyn Goatmilk LotionWe're into the driest season of them all for my skin. In the summer, when I'm at the beach and in the sun on a regular basis, I'm careful to protect and moisturize all the time. As the temperatures drop (if they just WOULD already in the DC area!) and the air gets drier, I get a little more lax, and my skin pays the price.

I tried Crabtree and Evelyn's Goatmilk Comforting Body Lotion, which is said to be light enough for sensitive skin. It was not heavy on my skin at all and absorbs quickly, which is a priority for me.The lavender scent is one of my favorites, so that's a nice bonus.  The line includes a Comforting Body Wash as well.

Crabtree & Evelyn LaSourceNext on my agenda: the 60-Second Fix Manicure set for hands, the body part that gets the most abuse from me in the winter. It's available in a "Helping Hands" kit for October, when 10 percent of proceeds are donated to breast cancer research.

Find a Crabtree and Evelyn location here, wherever you may be around the world.

Arcona Pumpkin - THE scent for the season

Arcona Pumpkin Body LotionRecently, I tried Arcona's Pumpkin Body Lotion; and I adore the scent!  The product is "infused with pumpkin extracts and glycolic acid," comes in two strengths:10% and 20%, and is said to "improve tonal quality and elasticity in the skin. Excellent for regenerating and repairing sun damaged skin; it should be used sparingly and once a day."

I'm on my third day of it, and I do notice a bit of a tingle...feels good!  I'll keep you posted.  But for now...I'm enjoying the smell :-)

Suki Kramer - The true mother of invention

Someone said "Necessity is the mother of invention".  The internet says it was Plato.  The makeup gods say it was Suki Kramer.  Tired of products that always irritated her sensitive skin and allergies, Suki quite literally took matters in to her own hands and came up with the suki line of fresh finish mineral cream makeup products and pure skin care products.

Made from organic, vegetarian, cruelty-free natural ingredients, these products are good for your skin and for your environment. Suki's products are also unique in that they are multitaskers:  The triple cream eye definer can be used as a shadow, liner or brow definer; the pure cream stain is used for lip or cheek.  Even better, the shades of each can be mixed and matched and blended to come up with your own signature colour.

Ah, all that organic good-for-you stuff is fine and good, but how well do they work?  Asks you.  Most awesomely, says Isuki-cream-stain2.jpg.  The pure cream stain as a lip colour goes on with a smooth, rich glide (use a lipstick brush to apply).  The colour varies in intensity the more you put on:  use a little bit for a hint of colour, a lot for full-on look-out lady lips. The product is very matte and as a result long-lasting; our team had it on for hours with no need to reapply. If you like a look with more shine, you'll need to add a lip gloss on top.  Either way, lips feel smooth, soft, and look sweet!

The Triple Cream Eye definer works similarly in that if you want intense colour, just put more product on!  Since it's a cream, it feels different if you're used to a powder - it goes on exceptionally smoothly and spreads beautifully, but it isn't dry instantly.  So the eyelids may feel a little clammy temporarily - blending very well helps this.  But it's worth it - this cream has kick ass staying power.

The sukicolor line also includes tinted active moisturizer - the equivalent to foundation, liquid formula concealer, and rich pigment mascara.

Bumble and bumble's Curl Conscious Conditioner delivers lots of curls!

Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious Curl Creme, Wavy Woman
Bumble and Bumble's Curl Conscious Creme for Fine to Medium Hair is an amazing product!  I got a sample from my hairdresser and... you know how it is, you put it with all the other samples and maybe forget about it, or grab some when you're going on a short trip.

Well, recently I was searching and searching for a product that would help to define my (permed) curls and had forgot all about the sample.  I tried one kind (made my hair crispy feeling) and another kind (smelled nice, but didn't do a thing) and one day I tried the Bumble and Bumble's Curl Conscious Creme sample.  WOW!  It has a patent pending curl enhancing ingredient that actually does what it claims to!

The box includes directions easy to use directions if you want to make your curly hair even curlier; if you just want to define what you've got, put a dollop (about the size of a dime) in your hands and work it well through your hair, from the roots to the end.  Air dry or use a diffuser and voila!  Soft, frizz-free curls!

What's the Time?? Nooka Time

nooka_logo.pngFun, futuristic and funky, I am totally seeing Gwen Stefani rocking one of these timepieces. I love them since they are different and total conversation pieces. They aren't your typical Timex so don't wear them like one, consider them fashion accessories.

It's a sculpture? A vase? A hat? Nope, it's a Dana Elle candle

Dana Elle Tahitian Vanilla Candle
If you didn't already know what this was, you'd probably it was a sculpture, a fancy vase, maybe a cup, or even a funny looking hat! Would you automatically think it was a candle? Me neither.

That's the beauty of these Dana Elle candles - they're works of art. Compared to mass-produced jar candles, these are pleasing to the eye... and the nose.

This candle to the left is infused with the fragrance of Tahitian Vanilla blended with Honeysuckle, Water Lotus, Coconut and Sandalwood upon a base of Heliotrope and Musk. There are seven other fragrances available, each with a different color container. Don't like to color of the container with your favorite scent? No worries - you can purchase a custom candle.

Perhaps the best thing about the candles is that the majority of the materials are hand made locally in Maine; where the Dana Elle is based. The glass is hand-blown by local artisans using techniques perfected by Italian craftsmen. I love the natural soy wax and cotton-paper wick; all-natural good stuff.

Each candle comes elegantly packaged in a black organza bag inside a stylish black box; an elegant gift to give or a luxurious indulgence for yourself.

It's the perfect gift for the candle-lover on your Christmas list.

Write Robinson - Cherry Blossom Ready to Write Cards

Email has obviously taken over handwritten communications sent via "snail mail." We want our communications sent instantly. But in doing so we miss a bit of that personal touch.  We miss out on that joy that comes when I personal note is waiting for you in the mailbox, seeing the handwriting of a friend or loved one - knowing who it is from before even looking at the return address.

My challenge to you - pick out some gorgeous, personalized stationery and get writing! Check out the Cherry Blossom stationery by Write Robinson featuring gorgeous papers hand-made from recycled cotton rags and hand-marbled in India.

These papers are classy! I was recently sent a sample and was blown away by the quality and workmanship. This is no ordinary paper, it's thick and feels rich beneath your fingers with a pretty brown ribbon that matches the custom name imprinting on the front of the card.

The Gardella Vampire Chronicles: Rises The Night

21n-fbkJFjL._AA_SL160_.jpg In Rises The Night, the second book in her Gardella Vampire Chronicles series, Colleen Gleason amps everything up a notch!  Intense passion, fierce battles, scarier vampires and lots of suspense kept me turning the pages as fast as I could read.  I must admit I have a weakness for bad boys, and the character of Sebastian fits that bill very nicely.  The way he helps Victoria end her mourning period over her husband, an intensely erotic scene, made me tingle!  Victoria goes through many changes in this book, although one in particular is quite tragic.

Here's an excerpt from Rises The Night found on the author's website.

The sea of chanting, bright-eyed faces was at her eye level for only a moment before she was dragged to her feet. Victoria had an instant to grope for her vis before she swung out at the vampires who came at her.

She kicked and dodged and punched, had the satisfaction of meeting one of them in the face, and was reaching back to pull a stake from her hair when her arms were grabbed and pulled down to her sides. Dimly aware that it had taken two vampires, one at each arm, to do so, she ducked and tried to twist free.

The grip was too strong; she couldn't break it. She couldn't get to her stakes, her holy water, her crucifix ... hands were on her everywhere, pulling at her dress, her arms, her legs, her breasts. She felt her head being jerked to one side by the hair, felt her coiffure loosen and her neck bare to the sweet-smelling room. The dull, pasty smell of blood on the breath of the vampire nearest her filled her nose, pushing away even the hypnotic scent of the incense.

When his teeth sank into her neck it was almost a relief.

All in all, a very satisfying read and I look forward with much anticipation to the third book in the series, "The Bleeding Dusk", to be released February 2008.

Not For Sale. The shoes that will make you walk

ctr_image_5000.jpg

Ladies, this is a time to take a short break from shopping. A treasure is awaiting you at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston! A one-of-a-kind shoe exhibit "Walk This Way," will take you from ancient Egyptian and Nubian sandals to contemporary wedges with rococo carved heels from MIU MIU's most recent collection. But you’ve got to really walk to see all of them. You see, they are cleverly placed throughout the MFA's galleries to illustrate their relationship to other works of art – paintings, furniture, etc.

I went there on the first day, and had a blast. A lot of people kept asking: “Where is that shoe collection?’ and were sent running all over the museum. It looked like Easter egg hunt there. It was not easy to find them. My trip turned out into two-hour marathon … but it was fascinating, and think of all the ice cream and pastries you can eat afterwards, and not feel guilty! If you don’t do marathon – no problem, take it easy. The exhibit runs through March 23, 2008. Plenty of time – and plenty of ice cream ahead!
