Back to school for big kids at Paperchase, Levenger's and The Container Store

Next week I'll be back in school full-time for the first time in more than a decade. Besides the obvious draw of the learning and career opportunities and all of that good stuff, I have to admit why I'm really doing it.

I am addicted to school supplies.

I've always written, so it's no shock that I love cool pens, but it goes beyond that. Paper, folders, planners - you name it. Maybe it's the promise of starting over that a new notebook promises, or the sense of order that a new binder suggests to my paper-challenged self. Like most things in life, I'd say it's a combination of factors that up to my status as a fool for office and school supplies.

Oh well. All things considered, markers in funky colors and five-subject notebooks are one of my more benign vices. So I've taken a look around and located some "grown-up" options for taking yourself back to school (or to the office, for that matter) in style.

Paperchase is a UK-based company that carries some of the coolest gift and stationery items around. The keyword for Paperchase is "color".

Paperchase butterflyYou can't be afraid of a jazzy pattern here, or a butterfly on your notebook there. I may not bring this fun pencil case into my grad school classroom, but I'd definitely keep it on my desk at home.

Online shopping for Paperchase is only available in the UK through AmazonUK. Stateside, you can find their merchandise in the gift and greeting card section of most Border's Books and Music stores. A recent stroll through a location near me turned up a ton of pens, notebooks, and other supplies that would work for me at home or school.

Levenger's - "tools for serious readers" - is a great source for beautiful (although pricey) portfolios, notebooks, furniture, briefcases and totes, and, of course, reading tools. Their online sale section, however, has plenty of fun and more affordable options for students. Levenger BookstandThis "desktop turnabout", for instance, is a compact turntable that elevates the book and lets you turn around. It's a great multi-tasking tool, especially for holding a book open while taking notes. It's currently marked down to $34.95 from $48.00.

The Container Store has a fabulous assortment of office and back-to-school supplies. Items like these cool Circa folders are part of the current Summer Sale, priced at $4.99 online for a pack of four. Cable IDs

And since multiple electronic tools are part of our lives these days, these cable ids are indispensable for keeping up to eight different cords separated by color. $6.99 is a steal compared to the time it takes to unravel cords and follow them back to the source.

I've stocked up. Now I just need to get to work!

Kérastase color-treated hair Hall of Famer!

Ladies, I write to you all today to let you in on my secret to soft, shiny, vibrant and healthy hair. I have used many kinds of shampoos and conditioners but I believe I have found a Hall of Famer! The Kérastase Bain Miror Shine-Revealing Shampoo for sensitized color-treated hair and Chroma Reflect Masque Radiance-Enhancing Masque for very sensitized color-treated hair has REALLY transformed my hair. My 'do is shoulder length, color treated and flippy, so I use a hairdryer and flatiron on it daily so it goes through the wringer. The first two weeks post coloring, my hair always looks super shiny and vibrant. I love that rich, true and deep tone I get, but sure enough it always starts to fade and look less and less shiny.

Recently I got the chance to try the Kérastase line. I am one of those girls who has read about Kérastase in magazines and seen tabloid television shows that rave about these products, I am here to join in and give my two biggest thumbs up or should I just give this line my two flips of the 'do up. LOL!

Bain Miror Shine-Revealing ShampooThe very first time washing and conditioning my hair, I noticed a difference. These have a soft floral scent that doesn't carry when rinsed out, so if you add a lot of products you don't have to worry about conflicting scent, these dissipate. I usually find that after a shampoo my 'do feels kind of like a lump on my head with some tangles. The Bain Miror Shine-Revealing Shampoo rinses and my 'do feels like corn silk; like I had conditioned it, it's AMAZING.

conitioner.jpgI really didn't have to use the Chroma Reflect Masque Radiance-Enhancing Masque, but I did. I scooped out a small amount and left it on while I washed up for about five to seven minutes. When I rinsed again it was so soft and tangle free. Of course, the real test was styling, and I think this was one of the first times that I could run a comb through my 'do without a tug.

This first time using the shampoo and conditioner, I didn't use any product just the dryer and immediately noticed that my 'do laid really flat with little to no flyaways and color shined and shined I felt like my hair was revitalized, I couldn't and still can't believe it.

After using the Kérastase , I have found that I don't need to use this on a daily basis, I can use it about twice a week and the other days my hair is still looking soft, shiny and more manageable. I have already used up my first bottle of both and am working my way through my second. I will always have this in the shower arsenal ready to go.

I really love that even though my color isn't new the color gets a boost and the shine is amazing! These are a couple products well worth my hard earned dough!!

Why didn't I think of the Bosom Button!?

toon.jpgThere are a myriad reasons why I need to pin the top of my blouse. But the biggest reason (besides my boobs) is that I am five feet tall, therefore my tops are cut too low. Cute if I am going out with my fiance; not cute if I am going to the office or a meeting. Normally I'd use a safety pin, a paper clip, elastics, or I'll wear a tank top under my blouse. I'm thankful that the bosom button was invented, unfortunately, i just wish it were me.

A Girl Must Shop at Nordstrom and the Natick Collection

How many ladies do you think would get out of bed at the crack of dawn and attend a beauty tailgating party? If you guessed a heck of a lot you would be correct. In honor of the opening of The Natick Collection and Nordstrom at the old Natick Mall, a beauty tailgating party was held.

I arrived at the party a good 15 minutes before it was set to begin (a yawn-inducing 8am, considering it was a 45 minute rush hour trek for me) and already there were ladies lined up at the humongous buffet, seated at cafe tables, and browsing makeup tables being set-up.

Christina and IHaving stopped at Starbucks for a pumpkin spice latte, I skipped the food and headed right to the tables (there had to be about 40 or more) until Christine Huellman from Dior caught my eye and asked if she could help me. "Sure" I said, "let's do the works!" and off we went! Christine and I had a wonderful time with my makeover. Turns out she's not from the area - she came in just for the event and she's based in New York City where she works as the education development manager at Christian Dior. And she's got awesome lips!

Christine showed me the Dior Capture Totale collection and then applied this Dior 'Diorskin' Airflash Spray Makeup before applying a little blusher and updating my eye colors. We chose this Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow palette which was perfect for my coloring and had the right amount of sparkle (almost non at all!) and she followed up with my favorite Diorshow Mascara. I used this opportunity to ask Christine for tips for dealing with my crooked lashes - I can't ever seem to get them to curl correctly. She suggested using a dry mascara wand (I picked up a few at Sephora) before applying mascara, to curl and brush my lashes into place. "Most people think that you need heat to curl lashes, but you can do just fine with a dry wand", she advised. Thanks for the awesome tip, Christine!

Christine finished me off with HydrAction Mist, and did my lips. She lined around my lips and then filled in the lips with the lip pencil which helps your lip color last longer. I usually go with a neutral rose color for my lips, but Christine thought I needed some bright pink - a hot color this season. I had my doubts, but I put my fate in her hands and was not disappointed. Turns out, when paired with the liner and this... amazing lip gloss it looks amazing and definitely not harsh like I thought it would. Christine talked a lot about blending lip colors to come up with the perfect color. Now I always thought all you had to do was apply lipstick. Oh how naive I was!

Stay tuned for more on my Nordstrom and Natick Collection shopping day!

I shopped 'til I dropped at the Natick Collection

For those of you just tuning in, I spent Friday at the Grand Opening of the Natick Collection and Nordstrom. When I last left you, I was just finishing up my Dior makeover.

Fruits & Passion

Fruits & Passion

Tommy in the CucinaImmediately following my makeover, I headed up the escalators to Fruits & Passion to meet up with fellow shopping addict, Lori from Moda di Magno and her husband Tommy who was taking pictures of the new Fruits & Passion store. Lori Magno and I were like a couple of school girls all "Eeeee!" about the shopping event! When we finished jumping up and down, Magno introduced me to the lovely Jessica Phenix, Eastern Territory Director for Fruit & Passions (she has the most amazing eyelashes and the itsy-bitsiest nose ring that I envy!).

Jessica and IShe gave me a tour of the store and described their collection - a wide variety of lotions and potions for bath, body, hands, feet, skin, aromatherapy, baby care, household and kitchen care, animal products, and even a selection of gourmet items. Onion Confit with Port? sign me up! I also met up with Carol Ientile, founder and Christine Galasso publicist of C.I. Visions - the PR agency for Fruits & Passion.

It's fair to say that I fell in love with Fruits & Passion at first site and I will definitely be enjoying (and reviewing) their products in the near future.

The Opening

Just about ten minutes before the opening at ten, the band began to play and two large machines blew tons of red, white, black & silver confetti out into the center of the mall. It was amazing. There's just something about confetti that makes people happy!

Confetti
More confetti

Immediately following the confetti, I turned around to check out the line of folks getting ready to be the first ones in the new Nordstrom store. It was craziness I tell ya! Just check out the pictures!

Waiting!
It's open! The crowd piles in

The Shopping
Magno and I headed in ourselves, shortly after the herd dwindled and headed over to the shoe section where I saw my first Manolo, and met Rick Stroik who works the shoe department.

I also discovered these this little morsel of goodness, Bettye Muller 'Decor' Pump. I must have it!

Bettye Muller 'Decor' Pump

Next we headed over to the handbag section where we met up with Allison Hathaway who works the handbag section. We played name that price with a few bags and then chatted it up with Allison who was wearing the most gorgeous purple silk top paired with leggings. The girl has got style!

Dior Miss CherieNext we stopped in the accessories section real quick to try on sparkly headbands and popped over to introduce Magno to Christine from Dior. Christine showed us some Dior perfume. I loved Dior 'Miss Dior Cherie' Eau de Parfum Spray. Christine gave Magno the quickest makeover ever (she looked amazing) and then we bid adieu. Poor Magno had to go back to work.

Louis Vuitton + mimosas = LOVEI on the other hand, had shopping to do. First up, Louis Vuitton. And what did I find upon my arrival? A waiter handing out mimosas. See this? THIS is what shopping should be like. Take notes. I took a glass and sipped my way through the store, falling in love with not one, but two pair of shoes.

Gorgeous shoes
I would wear these shoes

I stopped at the New Bare Escentuals store where I picked up a new buki brush.
Just the Bare Escentuals

Took a load off my feet at Shabby Chic (I could live in this store!)
Shabby Chic

Chatted with some owls at Anthropologie:
They said, "Who?"

And also discovered the scrunchies are back in style:
Scrunchies are back!

Discovered a new eatery coming soon - The Moonstruck Chocolate Cafe:
A must-visit!

Spied some Juicy pants:
Real Juicy

And felt the breeze at Tommy Bahama

There are a ton of new stores open including Tiffany & Co, Burberry and Coach, and a few new eateries like Sel de la Terre and Finale. I myself, had a sammich at Au Bon Pain and picked up some chocolate dessert at Godiva.

The new mall is amazing and gorgeous. Check out the furniture. It's fancier than what I have at home. You should see the restrooms. The rival the one at the Four Seasons!

Nicer than what I have at home

Discover your inner artist as you Wreck This Book!

There is nothing I like more than going to my P.O. Box and finding a surprise in it. The other day I visited my box even thought I wasn't expecting anything and there was a box from Amazon.Com waiting for me. I was excited. A friend gifted me with the most amazing and unique gift. It was something called WRECK THIS JOURNAL by Keri Smith. I expected it to be just a book on interesting things to do with your journal...but it was so much more. This is no mere book...this is an experience. The book itself is a journal- so you don't really need a journal even to utilize it. Each page is an exercise in doing something to "destroy" the journal. You will use all kinds of odd materials and stick things on pages, makes lists, use stamps...etc to create a work of art. It is really fun. I am enjoying the book immensely and I have only had it for about 3 hours.

The journal is an adventure and a process. It makes me feel so liberated and free and artistic. If you asked me if I considered myself artisit before getting WRECK THIS JOURNAL I would have looked at you and scoffed and said something like "Shyeah...if you consider crude stick figures artistic." I recommend this journal to the artisit who will love it and the non-artistic who will probably be resistant at first but then fall in love with it! Be warned though- this journal is more of a process than something you read...and you will be doing things to this little journal that might make you cringe- like throw things at it, poke holes in it and (gulp) tear pages out! wreckthisjournal.jpg

I am addicted to Black Mountain Gallery. Just say no to twee

thumb8860.jpgI was at my favorite jewelery store last weekend picking up an order, and I was reminded of my latest purchase there - the large Fayeth" pendant. I am usually not into hearts; I find them twee. This one? Not twee. Just lovely.

[Editor's note: I just HAD to look up twee because I had no idea what it was. Wiktionary defines is as "overly quaint, dainty, cute or nice."]

All jewelry from Black Mountain Gallery is handmade in Chapel Hill, NC. Most of it is (and all of my pieces are) sterling silver, but they also have gold and have recently added copper. (I covet these copper feather earrings.) The store has two 50% off sales each year where everything is half-price, but there are 50% off web specials year-round.

It makes scents to shop at The Perfumed Court

The Perfumed CourtI recently stumbled upon a site that offers decants of your favorite perfumes - and probably some of your soon to be favorites as well! The Perfumed Court, has literally thousands of perfumes, some not even available in America!

My tastes always seem to run to the incredibly expensive (champagne taste on a beer budget is what my Mother used to say to me) and really, who wants to spend over $100 on a scent that you're not sure you're really going to like?

For over a year, I've had Tea for Two by L'Artisan, on my wish list, but at $125.00 a bottle and given the fact it's not generally easy to find, I hesitated to commit without at least trying it first. Thanks to The Perfumed Court, I was finally able to test Tea for Two, and was right in thinking that I would love it! I also purchased a decant of Aqua di Parma's Profuma, which retails for about $225.00. Luckily for my finances, I found that I didn't love it as much as I thought I would!

So browse their list of scents...your favorite(s) is sure to be there!

Dress for a Cause for Sara Campbell

070911 004On Monday night I attended my first fashion show, ever. I know, I know, it's hard to believe, but it's true.

It was an amazing experience. Ms. Magno and I met up at The Boston Harbor Hotel to attend the Dress for a Cause fashion show, hosted by and featuring clothing by Sara Campbell.

I'm glad I was able to attend this as my first fashion show, not only because of the absolutely wonderful clothing by Sara Campbell, but for the cause we were all there supporting - Breast Cancer. So many of us have been touched by the disease - whether we ourselves have been diagnosed, or a family or friend. I, too, have been touched by it personally - my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor - and it's a cause I hold dear to my heart.

What made the even more special, were the models - many of them cancer survivors or closely involved in the cure for cancer. There was not a dry eye in the house! Go ladies!

Proceeds from the show and 100% of the profits of a handful of special products will go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In addition, 10% of all sales during the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) at Sara Campbell will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and customers also receive 10% off anything pink!

If you're in the area, stop by the Sara Campbell store in Boston's South End. If not, take a look at the items for sale on the Sara Campbell web site. After seeing all the wonderful clothes, I'd say that Sara Campbell clothes were cheerful, bright, and stunning! I definitely want one of every item I saw. But don't trust me. Take a look for yourself:

Give your office some style with Modern Office Revisited

annetaintor.jpgI am a sucker for office products...especially sticky-notes. The people at my work know this and often shower me with sticky-notes from their travels. I have flip-flop shaped stickies and hibiscus shaped stickies. I have stickies in the shapes of stars and hearts and flowers. I have sticky notes with jelly beans on them and sticky notes with photos of yarn on them. I even have some with my initial on them.

With this amount of sticky notes in my office, you'd think it would be very easy for me to resist buying myself some new sticky notes. That was until I found Anne Taintor's Modern Office Revisited notepads (including the Sticky Notes collection). I am particularly fond of my sticky notes that say "someone called....about something" that are in a lovely shade of pink. Because I couldn't resist I also bought the pack that says "she was comforted by the knowledge that they were helpless without her" which I found out to be oh so true when I got back from my recent week-long vacation. As well as the very apropos notepad stating "I dreamed my whole desk was clean."

I will be the first to admit that these notepads and sticky notes are the teensiest bit on the expensive side...but they make me smile so much that it is totally worth the extra dollar or two. Not to mention the fact that they could make great gifts. My next order from them will be the Fancy File Folders because who can hate filing in these folders? Not me.

Bobbi Brown eyeshadow - just say no to clowns!

Bobbi Brown Metallics eye shadowOk, I love, love, love Bobbi's approach to beauty: don't go overboard and look like a clown! I am totally for that. I am sure you have all seen a woman, young or old who is rocking way, way, way to much makeup and more importantly shadows. Yikes, Halloween only comes once a year so let's try and keep the shadow simple and pretty till 10/31.

I don't have this particular metallics eye shadow palette but I do have other shadows from Bobbi. I love them for many reasons some of the best points of interest for me are:

  1. Pigment - The depth of the color is wonderful even when it's a light shade the pigment is amazing; I can always see what I have applied.

  2. Texture - I find these shadows to be velvety smooth to the touch which allows application to be flawless and smooth

  3. Stayability - I don't use a ton of shadow but I do like some and I have a few lines that I am partial to only because I know I can get an entire day out of one application and Bobbi's are right up there at the top of the list, I know that I will have minimal creasing and the shadow will stay put! I love that!!

All in all, these are not on the expensive side but they are worth it, less effort, amazing colors and a great product, makes me dish out the dough over and over and over again!! Bobbi's iconnewest Metallics eye shadow is a high-shimmer formula with a soft and creamy feel. This palm-sized palette features three high-pigment colors that apply smoothly and evenly—stays crease-free for all-day wear. Metallic Eye Shadows Featured: Sage, Balsam and Forest. There are also 3 other GORGEOUS palettes!

The Best of SephoraLike many of you, I love Sephora. How could you not? All those rows of makeup - I'm like a kid in a candy store! My only problem? I get overwhelmed and never know what to buy.

So I was thrilled to find out that Sephora had recently come out with a list of their best sellers. Brilliant! Now that I know what everyone else is buying, it makes it easier for me to decide which items are best.

Here are some of Sephora's best-sellers:

Face

Eyes

Lips

Skincare

Hair

Cheeks

Fragrance

Bath & Body

Sun

Tool

Beauty Breakthrough
