Scam Alert: Best Buy “Online Only Pricing”

Some days all we want is instant gratification. Take the following for example:

Having just received my income tax refund, I wanted to spoil myself and I wanted to spoil myself now. I decided I wanted an ipod touch, so i went online to check out prices and I found that Best Buy had it online for $183.99 which was an online only price but I figured I’d head into the store since I read somewhere on the internet that they matched their online prices.

When I got to the store the iPod touch was $199.99 and when I mentioned that it was $183.99 online she said that they don’t price match their online prices. I immediately tweeted:

MeganCapone: Wtf @bestbuy? Why are store prices more than online. Must satisfy instant ipod touch craving 1:32 PM Mar 10th via twidroid

I waited for a response and when none came (at 2:32pm EST) I bought the iPod touch on BestBuy.com using my cell phone and at 2:51PM my item was ready to pick up at that very same Best Buy store.

MeganCapone: @bestbuy doesn’t match online prices in store. I sat in the store & ordered ipod touch at online price for instore pickup. Makes no sense! 2:53 PM Mar 10th via twidroid

What a total and complete waste of my time. From what I gather Best Buy (and many other retailers including Target and WalMart) prices its items online to compete with other online retailers. But it then seems to price the items in their retail stores to compete with other retail stores. It all seems kind of shady especially since you can actually sit in the store on your cell phone, buy the same exact item and pick it up a half an hour later in the same store for the online price that the sales clerk wouldn’t give me because they don’t match their online-only prices.

Not only is this a HUGE hassle for me (I have to jump through hoops to get the same item at the better price) but it’s a scam to those who don’t know any better or couldn’t be bothered with the hassle. I’m sure there are plenty of people that accept that they don’t match the price online and just buy it in store and that’s what Best Buy is counting on. It’s essentially discrimination – I have access to the Internet and am able to figure out how to get the discounted price. Someone without access to the Internet and online shopping skills gets stuck with the in-store price.

Kudos to Best buy for trying, though. Surfing on my $183.99 iPod touch later that I evening I received the following tweets from Best Buy “helpers”:

Coral_BestBuy @megancapone In most situations our stores will price match our BestBuy.com pricing upon request – full policy: www.BestBuy.com/PriceMatch 4:28 PM Mar 10th via web in reply to megancapone

My Response: @Coral_BestBuy not in my case. Was told they don’t price match online. Ordered in store on phone & pickedup. Hassel! 6:56 PM Mar 10th via TweetDeck in reply to Coral_BestBuy

Coral_BestBuy: @megancapone Well I’m glad you were clever and still were able to purchase – what store were you at so I may address this with their mgmnt? 7:03 PM Mar 10th via TweetDeck in reply to megancapone

My Response: @Coral_BestBuy thx. Nashua 9:01 PM Mar 10th via TweetDeck in reply to Coral_BestBuy

@megancapone Came across your tweet, sorry to hear, send info to Twitter@BestBuy.com We’ll be happy to help 3:11 PM Mar 10th via TweetDeck in reply to megancapone

So the moral of the story?

  1. Don’t shop at Best Buy (or any store whose pricing policies that are not to your liking).
  2. If you have no other choice than to shop at Best Buy, demand the same price as online.
  3. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Don’t be afraid to ask to speak to the manager.
  4. Use twitter and online social networking to your advantage – like many retailers, Best Buy guards its reputation using twitter. Sometimes a simple tweet about your situation can get you instant (or in my case, far too late) resolution and turn it around for you.
  5. Buy your iPod touch at Amazon – right now it’s $181.99

Get Naked With Your Honey! (Financially Speaking)

You may have heard that the topic that couples argue about most is money. So you can imagine that with rising unemployment and the unsteady economy couples would deal with even more money conflicts.

Being newly unemployed myself, I can relate. Add to that the fact that we have completely different spending/savings habits (I spend/he saves) and we’ve got a recipe for disaster.

We’re lucky, though. Having been together for almost seven years and married for almost a year and a half, we’ve made some great progress. I am no longer a slave to my charge card and have inherited his good saving habits while he worries less about money and recognizes it as a means to an end and not the end itself.

So what can you do to limit your money arguments?

In their book, Get Financially Naked: How to Talk Money with Your Honey Manisha Thako and Sharon Kedar help you gain the confidence to bring up the money topic, evaulate your financial compatibility and how to plan and implement a successful money strategy.

Puj Baby Bathtub Review

I’m a New Hampshire mom of 3 and I first became aware of Puj after my second child was born. I bought the Go Sling and I love it. It’s a quality, easy to use, pretty sling. I was sent an email a few months ago that announced a new product, the puj baby bathtub, was looking for testers. I was delighted because I was sure looking for a better way to bathe my four month old. I applied and was chosen. Puj sent me the tub free of charge and in return asked me to post an honest review.

I gave it four good tries in two different bathroom sinks hoping I would change my mind but it just did not work for us. My son repeatedly kicked open the magnetic sides in both sinks, they seemed to loose their magnetization when wet. The bottom had an awkward fit in the sink and I found it difficult to wash him in the confines of the tub. I had to actually lift him up, drain and refill the sink in order to rinse him. One of the sinks had a faucet spout that was not movable, this proved to be a challenge as well. The faucet was difficult to work around and I had to be really careful to insure that he was not scratched.

I think what it all comes down to is size. My son is 4.5 months and he’s a big boy at almost 17 pounds. The 0-6 month age range is probably more like 0-3 months. The average American baby will be too big for this tub after 12 weeks or so.

I can see the tub being useful for bathing a newborn. It is soft, lightweight and easy to assemble. It does dry quickly and the flat design makes it very easy to store opposed to many baby bath tubs out there. Bottom line is if you are on your first child and plan to have more then go for it. Given its short lifespan, the convenience of the Puj could justify its price tag of about $40 dollars if it’s used for multiple children.

We’re ALL Bitches (on a Budget)

Today we have a guest post from Rosalyn Hoffman, author of Bitches on a Budget: Sage Advice for Surviving Tough Times in Style.

Thank you so much for inviting me to be a guest blogger on A Girl Must Shop (our sentiments, exactly).

Our book, Bitches on a Budget: Sage Advice for Surviving Tough Times in Style, is a compendium of smart tips and thoughtful advice about living a stylish life for less. It’s fun to read, sometimes bawdy, often ironic, and chock full of practical help and information. Ten chapters cover everything from: shopping, to exercise, to healthy eating, to wheels, to travel, to home décor, to food, to pets (pamper the bitch). A modern woman just can’t (even if she could afford to) consume everything in her path. After all, nothing is less attractive than a bloated bitch.

You are doing such a bang up job of rooting out sales, bargains and special places to find your goodies, we thought we would share an excerpt from our bag that illuminates our budget savings methods.

“Keep Your Hands to Yourself

Leave your house with only enough cash for a cup of coffee. Bring neither a credit card nor a license (stores are sneaky and will allow you to charge just by having a piece of ID). You’re a fan of role-play, right? This time, instead of the naughty nurse, you’re a tourist. Pretend each store you enter is in a foreign country. Not only are you far from home, but also the stores are really museums. You can’t speak the language and, since you’re in a museum, you’re strictly forbidden to touch anything.

You’re now a shopping tourist discovering what’s hot. Start big; aim high. Go to the stores you can no longer afford—Neiman’s, Barneys, Bloomies—and just cruise. Look. Do not touch. Remember, you’re a museum visitor. No eye contact with salespeople. No big, “Hi, how are you?” Even if you’re from the Midwest and warm and friendly by nature, control yourself. Put on your urban bitch face; pretend you don’t understand and just keep moving. Do not get involved. Once you connect with a real person you’re entering into an expensive committed relationship. If you let them get you undressed and in the fitting room—well, bitch, order the rice; wedding bells will be ringing.

Indulge your fantasies—just don’t open your wallet. Then leave the high temples of fashion and move into the mall. Here English is spoken and you can begin to touch again (bring the Purell). Bloomie’s to J.Crew and Banana Republic. Neiman’s to GapBody and Nine West. Barneys to Zara and the Limited. See what repeats. Notice how Nine West has knocked off Prada; Banana has those hip new wide-legged trousers like Dolce & Gabbana; H&M has the cutest black-patent trench coats like Max Mara.

“Search and lust” will become your new motto. Once you find something you are mad for, walk away. Yes, walk away! Hell, you aren’t the kind of slut who would go all the way on the first date anyway. Think about it, sleep on it, and if you wake up panting for that hot new blouse, wishing you’d made love to it, go back and make it your own.”

Perricone Cosmetics’ Cold Plasma: Customized nutrition for your skin

Question – What is the largest organ in the body?

If you answered skin, you’re right! Sometimes we forget how important our skin is. As the largest organ in the body, our skin is the barometer for internal health. As we age, our skin changes, creating the need for targeted nutrients. Poor nutrition, the environment, stress, hormonal changes and modern lifestyles deplete the skin of essential nutrients needed to maintain its health and help prevent the visible signs of aging.

Perricone Cosmetics‘ Cold Plasma’s formula works according to your individual, unique needs through biochemical individuality – a self-selection process charged by phospholipids, that help direct needed nutrients where they can be effectively used through the cell membrane. This also means, if any of the ingredients aren’t needed, they just won’t be utilized.

Cold Plasma works through this system to deliver optimal nutrition to skin cells to help skin achieve a healthy, glowing, youthful appearance.

Be sure to check out Perricone’s newest product Neuropeptide Firming Moisturizer – it contains a lot of the same ingredients as Cold Plasma.
